Yeah, it's happening... I can feel it coming on. I quess I've reached the age where a big'ole dressed G.W. would feel awful nice

. Sweetie has caught me ogling plenty of them on Craigslist over the last few months and I must admit some were droolworthy...... I'm stuck on the '81 to '83 GL 1100's.

I have had 2 1982 Goldwings. An Aspencade and an Interstate.
Both smooth, long range solid runners.
You should be able to find anice one in the 2K to 3K range. If you don't get in a hurry, you may be able to find one cheaper.

I have to say, the older I get, the more appealing those 80's era Goldwings start to look. At this point, though, I think I'd still choose a '75, but by the time I can afford another bike and have the time to work on one I think the comfort factor may win out.

No appeal at all to me. If you want a full dresser, want not just get a small convertible and then you won't have to put your feet down when you come to a stop sign?

For starters:

1. A small convertible doesn't lean into the corners.
2. A small convertible isn't meant to get wet on the inside, so you have to make sure to put the top up.
3. A small convertible that costs the same as an older 'Wing wouldn't perform as well and probably wouldn't even be road-worthy.
4. A small convertible costs a lot more to insure.
5. A small convertible isn't a motorcycle.

Wasn't it the 1100's that had some stater issues? I have to admit I drive the 750's more than my 1500 GW. The only time I am on the Wing is when my wife wants to go riding, which is fine with me. I enjoy the comfort. We have taken some nice trips on it and have some great conversations through the headsets. We have been riding together since high school and the 750's she is just not comfortable on. As long as she wants to ride I will keep it in the stall.

How do the Goldwings handle when you want to make radical direction changes...can they be countersteered/manhandled around a person who stops in the middle of an intersecton in a flash?...if so,thats a good thing.There are a lot of auto's doing that around here lately. I guess w/ the Goldwing,the newer ones w/ ABS brakes might be tempting; I still prefer a 2 wheeler that I can throw around when I need to.I may own a Goldwing some day & if I do I may be able to relax once I train myself to think way ahead or practice ESP on the road.
They turn very slow RPM's and cruise very sedately...great for Interstate long distance travel...comfortable !

I would be more interested in the GL 1000 to keep the weight down. Know a guy who has long parked 76 that I could get cheap but have no room or time at the moment.

Yeah, 81, 82 is the ticket- 1100cc range before the engines got ridiculously big along with the bike.
I would contemplate one if I didn't have the VFR's.

My wife made me get a Goldwing

- after she had a chance to sit on one. I do like the look of the very early models, but my personal experience is limited to the latest GL1800 version. I have had a 2003 GL1800 since new and this past season reached the 100,000 km mark on it without any problems. (To tell the truth, just after that point, a front fork seal went - but that has been the only thing needed except for regular maintenance.) For such a big bike (and I'm not a very big person) this bike handles very well and resembles a modern sportbike in the way it can be ridden. It is by far the best bike I have ever ridden or owned. It is THE way to ride two-up, and you can ride all day long without complaint. In fact, now the missus bugs me to go for a ride whenever we are free.

i have an 84 - 1200 Aspencade and take a week to 10 day trip on it every year. No problems, just regular maintenance stuff. there was a problem in them with some of the wiring for the alternators. A poor junction box which would heat up because of the resistance and fry the stator. The common fix is to take the connector out and hard wire. I had to do this to mine. Otherwise, they thrive on neglect.

The CB 750 will always be my first love, but I have a GL 1500 that is hard to beat for comfort. I'll admit I put more miles on the Goldwing than the 750s.

Wow, lots of Wing owners among the tribe !....... For me it would be about a little more comfort on a long trip vs. a 750, also lots of storage when travelling too. No need for a 2-up bike in my case, the Mrs. would always ride her own bike on a trip

Anyone know any common issues on the gl1100's ( Johnie said starter probs. ? ).......... also what's the best Wing Forum ?

Getting to the old fogey age myself, I think you would enjoy the Wing. Very smooth, lots of power, they were a sport bike when they first came out. We have a GL1800 which is a fair bit bigger than the '70's and '80's bike but still enjoy it very much. It can still do good things. I would like to have a "bare" one in the stable.
I trhink the stator problem was more with a connector going bad because it was exposed to the weather causing more resistance making the stator work harder to get the power out and eventually failing. The fix was to eliminate the connector by hard wiring the stator into the harness. Someone else will jump in I'm sure about this.

My Three Wings.
A number of years ago after a particularly grueling ride back from Daytona on the 550F I told the wife that we either need to go on diets or get a bigger bike. So naturally we got a Goldwing.
The first one I got was an 81 GL1100 It took one ride and the wife was in love with it. We have put many thousands of touring miles on it.
Although my first love is the 550F the GL1100 is a close second.
I have since acquired 2 more wings, a 75 GL1000 and an 85 GL1200. The 1200 is a really good Bike to ride on the Interstate, she will run 90 mph all day long in supreme comfort with our intercom, radio and cup holder.
The 1100 is good touring bike for twisty roads she will run the interstate in comfort but really comes into her element on the back roads.
The 1000 is a Naked wing and is more of a hotrod and shorter distance runner, Rides a lot like a CB750 and gets lots of attention everywhere I go.
All three are excellent bikes but the 1100 is my favorite.
