1977 CB550K - Front Brake Caliper

How do we know if the front caliper is bad to the point of no restore?

I am going to replace the master cylinder with an aftermarket one but I am having a hard time figuring out what "other" caliper would work on the stock fork with no modification.

My caliper is currently in front of the fork. I have seen many having the caliper behind the fork. Is it just a matter of flipping the fork and everything works?

Any reason you don't want to rebuild? I'm in the process of trying to do that with mine rt now. Bought honda rebuild kit for my front master cylinder, all new lines(non honda...slingshot stainless) and honda seal for the front caliper piston. Sounds like from most the reading I have done the part that might need replacing on the front caliper is the piston if that's pitted up from rust or old fluid...if so factory one can be had for about 70-80 bucks. I was lucky I guess, got a 71 and the piston is clean. Good luck!

As long as the piston and the cylinder are in decent shape, no need to replace it. A rebuild kit is inexpensive. Put the $ into S.S. brake lines and perhaps a MC rebuild.

I ended rebuilding it. The piston is in great shape, I was just wondering if my caliper housing was in good shape enough... Ended up being in pretty good shape after thourough cleaning.

SS Lines are on the list. I will go straight from the master cylinder to the brake caliper.

My master cylinder on the other hand is in not so good shape so I need a new one (and it would allow me to plug the brake light directly on it instead of the middle of the line keeping it simple).

PS: if you plan on getting a new piston, take a look at the Stainless Steel pistons selling on eBay
