CBR wheels on CB750
« on: December 08, 2011, 10:23:57 AM »
I know that the DOHC guys seem to use the F2 and F3 CBR600 wheels often on their builds but dont see it that much on the SOHC bikes

Im not really talking about just "bolt on" but something that doesnt involve unraveling the mysteries of the world.
I would really like to use the stock swingarm if that can be done.

anyone know of a good way to do this?

This looks like a different swing arm
but its the look im talking about

... to say 'CBR' wheel could be a broad topic seeing as how cbr's have been around for maybe 20+ years?

Am I correct that basically you want a 'sport bike' rear tire on your CB750?

Two areas come to mind when I think of fitting a non-stock rear tire on a CB750. The first is tire width. Regardless of where the wheel is from, the widest tire you are going to get on a CB750 without modifications is a 150 or 160 tire. This is purely a function of the position of the front sprocket in relation to the swing arm. I am running an FZR rear wheel on this chop...

The tire is a 150 and just barly clears the chain. Yamaha FZR rear wheels are a really good way to go, and are as close to 'bolt on' as you will get. You will still need to cut spacers and deal with the fact that the axle will be undersized. I solved this with a 'stepped' spacer.

If you want a wider tire than 160 you enter the realm of offset motors and jack-shafts. I will assume that will fall under the heading of "unravelling the mysteries of the world" so I will not indulge!  :-X

Not really looking for a huge tire.
i was thinking the cbr600F2 as its a mechanical drive front.
the rear is 4.5 wide i think.

...a quick egay search does show a CBR tire thats 170, so I think that is to wide. Only way to know is get one and see how it lines up with the front sprocket. Like I said I can tell you the mid 90's yammy FRZ is a perfect fit. That would be my recommendation.

The bike you're looking at has modern front and rear suspension.  Just saying.
'78 CB750K.  Throttle ripper.
'71 CB100.  Grocery getter.
'01 XL883.  Panty dropper. Gone but not forgotten.

Yes the front is modern and the swing arm is not stock but its not from a CBR.

How wide is the FZR wheel?
I like the pattern of the CBR wheel

Im more then game to swap the front forks but the swing arm is a pain to deal with....or is it?

...FRZ rear wheel is 150.

Keep in mind you do not 'swap' front forks, you 'swap' front ends, triple trees and all. The diameter of any modern sport bike fork will be wider than that of the CB750, so for example in the pic you posted, to get those forks on that bike the trees that go with the forks also had to be used. This usually requires removing the stem from the stock CB750 trees and inserting it into those of the donor front end (trees).

For the swing arm you have a number of things to deal with. First it needs to be the right width. Most swingarms are wider (at the frame) than the CB750, so this means they have to be 'brought down' to size to fit in the stock frame (grinded or milled). Then you have to consider the diameter of the bolt holding the swing arm in place in relation to the one on the frame. Its probably bigger, so that would have to be addressed.

Yes i understand that its a front end swap and not just the forks.

I have seen some DOHC guys run cbr wheels with good luck.
from the look of some of them they are running the cbr wheel in the stock forks.  and from i understand the early dohc forks are very close to sohcs
I was thinking that maybe this would work better if i swapped to a dohc swing arm.

I like the multi spoke look of the cbr wheels
goal isnt for a crazy wide tire but for a interesting look/stance
