I broke a valve cover?
« on: December 08, 2011, 03:51:13 PM »
As I tightened the valve cover, I heard a crack. It took me a bit to find it, but the crack was in the threads of the valve cover. It would not tighten down. I'm just happy nothing broke off and went down in the case.

So....I guess I'm in the market for some new tappet covers...

Is this a 500 or 550 did you rubber bands to hold the rockers up?

It's not all that uncommon.  The 17mm nut on top leads many to believe those tappet covers need to be torqued down tight, but really they only need to be snug enough for the o-ring to keep the oil from leaking out.

Its a 550. I didn't use rubber bands. I'm not sure what you mean.

I think Ken was talking about installing the actual valve cover, since that's what it said in the title, and not the tappet caps which is what you were really referring to.  When installing the valve cover you have to make sure all the rocker arms are held fully up to keep from bending a valve stem.  Using rubber bands is one of the more popular ways of doing this.

I've broken 4 of mine -.-

Broke the threads off in the head.
Cracked the cover.
Stripped the head on two.

And yes, the new ones seem to be made from a different kind of metal.

Many models of the Goldwing use the same caps on the shaft drive, as well as the KZ1000 shaft drive models.
