Fuming... For a reason?
« on: December 08, 2011, 04:42:46 PM »
I just received my engine covers back from the powder coater... only to find out that they powder coated over the old gasket material.

I am amazed and pissed all at once - especially since I was promised the parts would be cleaned properly. Now I'm stuck with a bunch of useless shiny metal. Can't wait to find out what happens next.

That is all.

The way I see it is you were too lazy to remove the old gasket material yourself and took the job to a business that specializes in coating and you expected they would remove the gasket material.  My powdercoater media blasts my pieces, now when it comes to curcial surfaces (ie: mating surfaces) I make sure those are taped off so there is no powdercoat going to be sandwiched between the gasket and the surface.  I don't even want the mating surface media blasted.  Remember they specialize in coating not rebuilding motors or bikes so they have no idea how the part fits or is going to be used.  We have to give them complete details as to what gets coated and what doesn't.  Live and learn mate, chalk it up to experience.

not trying to be hard on you... but if you knew enough to tell them to clean the parts, you should know enough to just do it yourself so that it will be up to your par.

my question is this, though... why is he powdercoating your joining surfaces anyway??

Uhh... hate to admit to reusing the gaskets, but when they come off almost clean I leave the little bit that is left intact on the other side of the mating surface.  A little stringy of Yamabond will take care of it. ???

If it weren't for second hand gaskets, I would not be riding.  They are way to useful.
But yeah, dude.  You should have cleaned your stuff yourself.

Regardless, his discussion with the contractor was to include cleaning.

Still I would have cleaned it myself too

Well... I forgot all about this post.

I'm in agreement with the 'clean it yourself' guys, but it's not what I ponied up for.
The shop does mill work as well as a variety of powder coatings. The deal was to get the mating surfaces professionally done - free of charge with the powder coat. I hate cleaning that crap, so yes, I was lazy, and left it to some professionals.

The owner of the shop called me and apologized up and down claiming they fired someone because it wasn't the first slip up of this nature... He had FedEx pick up the parts and turned them back around in a couple days all square and shiny.

Hate to see someone loose their job over this.

Yupp... I'm hoping it was just poor taste lip service.

On the other hand... if this has happened multiple times because some lazy mullet didn't feel like doing his job, then they should can him - plenty of people out there willing to work hard and not cost their company money.

Did this thread make bcart quit the forum?

And I would not hesitate to fire someone, in an instant, for crap like that.  They obviously don't want their job.  As much trouble as I've had getting a job over the past year, I know that I have more pride in my work than most people and I should be getting these jobs over complete #$%*ing idiots.  Hiring better employees during this economic downturn would be my first priority anyway, there are all sorts of super stars out there that are out of work.

If the employee is a continuous F-up, then drastic measures are certainly in order, but you never really know the full story when presented by only one of the parties.

Maybe the guys wife left him for some SOHC chick magnet (pretty much speaks to all of you) or as happened to my buddy, she discovered her inner lesbian and kicked his sorry dick out on the street.

It’s a drag that the gaskets didn’t get removed before coating, but really fellas…...is it truly the end of the world as we know it?

Now get back to the eggnog and enjoy Christmas, damit.  ;D
