The file size of the image on the phone is probably to big for the forum size limit.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Check cush drive and float levels. An extreme rich condition could possibly cause bluing of the pipes as burning fuel exits the exhaust. With an exhaust temp gauge there is a bell curve of temps and you can see the same temp on the lean side or on the rich side. the only way I could tell was an Os sensor or making a jet change to see which way the temp goes. Floats make a large difference in fuel mix. On a holley carb 1/2 turn on the float valve nut equals a jet size.

Hey, thats a nice bike in the pic....hope you get it sorted out.

As far as h
The ignition...have a loo here
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=67543.0

This ignition requires the least energy to run on the already barely adequate charging system.  And it allows for a rehook up the points on the very rare occasion it should fail. (I dont think there's been a single report of a failure?)

You may want to also get a trickle charger to keep the battery up...i do remember a notable difference in running on a flat battery.  In the mean time you may very well want to get the timing rock ssolid, with timing light and the gap right on. you can file down the points and regap them. the bikes are really sensitive to off timing.

Oh and i forgot to mention what I think might be the greatest attraction of the 400...you can use all of its power most of the time...and not get into too much trouble...and all the sounds point to 1980's Z1R...but you look down and you're only doing 50mph....

Best of luck with it. youre at the right place here...stick with it and you'll get it running great for sure.

had a look at the hondaman ignition, looks like a great system, id need to replace my points too to use it, so weighing up the pros cons cost etc at the moment.

in regards to the cb400f power and being able to use it, that was definately a factor when i was buying it! i owned a triumph street triple before (100bhp) and well, i was concerned for my safety... and my license. that thing was insane...

hi don, cush drive recently replaced but the carbs will get a thorough working over including checking the levels.

camelman, dyna s.. maybe a little out of my price range, but will definately investigate. only worry is that im already using a 55/60w headlamp, might send me over the limit?

also... emailed kevin @ttr400, and after following this thread he will be making a few clutch basket dampers. will let you know what i find out about the rivets as im not familier with them and where to get them..

and again, thanks for all the encouraging words, now when i ride to work in the wind and rain, the niggles in my bike are simply things i will enjoy fixing!

1. change oil to 20w-50, gonna try mineral first, CASTROL ACT EVO 4T 20W-50.

Definitely do this before bothering with the clutch!  I just changed from Mobil 1 10W-40 to Valvoline 4-stroke MC conventional 20W-50 and shifting is quite a lot better now.

i think i might go for electronic ignition too, my points are nearly out of adjustment, and to buy the hond points, possibly codensers, might aswell just go electro. the 2 im looking at are the pamco and one i found called accent something or other. any experience on a 400 with these?

ashley

My 400F came with a Dyna... the power draw might be kind of annoying if you ride in-town and are stopped a lot of the time.  But you can't really beat the tuning and good spark.
