Transmission undercutting services?
« on: December 13, 2011, 04:35:18 pm »
Does anyone have suggestions for undercutting services, besides Fast By Gast? I sent them two transmissions a YEAR ago, and after months of calls only now finally got a call back from Paul, the owner. He was very apologetic, but his "very discounted" quote was almost twice what he quoted me when the transmissions arrived there last December. He basically told me that these old transmissions are a pain in the ass and that they don't really want to do them. That's fine... maybe I could have been told that 9 months ago? He also told me that they've NEVER done undercutting for the $50 a gearset he quoted me a year ago, while there are multiple threads on this site with people quoting similar prices from FBG.

Everyone here seems happy with FBG, but I'm frustrated as #$%*. He told me APE and Cycle Exchange both do their undercutting through FBG anyway... so is there anywhere else to use? I'm not afraid of paying the going rate, I just don't appreciate the runaround.

Dang man, sorry to hear that from  FBG. Kinda hard to imagine anyone udercutting a tranny for less than $200 these days.

Try contacting Kim at Carolina Cycle.  I think he can hook you up or send you in the right direction.  I've used him for a few ZX11 trannys and he's done my KZ's for me but no a CB yet. R&D in Florida is costly but Mark knows his stuff as well.

Let us know who you use and the cost.

I had mine done at APE. Less than 2 weeks turnaround incl shipping from Indy to CA. Rumor was they batch up the work, and I happened to send mine in at the right time of the cycle. So ask them.

They are the sponsors of this forum, see the banner at the top of this thread.

Big Jay started the firm many years ago working on CB750s.  Original CB750 specialist.

I doubt that with as fast a turnaround mine had, and with Big Jay's history with the CB750, that they farm out ANY machine work they advertise. call them and see. I can't imagine.

We actually do farm out the trans stuff because we are simply too busy to do it in house. We use several people depending of the type of trans.

Interesting. Glad you're so busy. Darn the recession. Seems there is money in certain places.   :D

I know I've spent my share with you and others.   :D

I'll be back home Saturday and let you know what they charged me for the last 550 I had done. Actually the last job they did was the 6spd but I just don't remember the cost.

Too bad for the news Paul. They do super work, and were always quick. Not sure what has changed.

Jay, what makes the 750 Honda transmissions so much more difficult to undercut than any other type????

They do a lot more than just undercut gearsets though.

I have often had the dogs hardwelded and thencut. They are much more durable.

Back in 2000, when I had my head and cyls done by Ron Scrimsa at Racing Engine Services, http://www.racingenginesvc.com/  I asked him who could undercut my tranny. he gave me the name "Murdoch's". I wrote it down in my notes and never looked at it since.

Turn's out to be Murdoch Racing Enterprises, claiming invention of the air shifter.

Here's their web site, seems they do specialize in transmissions for drag racers. That should include undercutting. Worth a call.
http://murdochracing.com/parts.htm

here's a paragraph lifted from the "About MRE" page:
"Racecuts, Procuts, Magnaflux inspection, heat treating, hardface gear dog welding, semi-autos and full autos are all transmission services first introduced by MRE. Today MRE is still the industry leader in high performance transmission modifications, handling everything from your basic street-strip undercuts to custom, one-off automatics for exotic applications."

That ought to do the trick.

Well first off, that's what FBG quoted me last year. $300 plus cost for magnafluxing, hardwelding, etc. I searched the forum and found several posts quoting similar prices for work done. Anyway, like I said... I don't want something for nothing, I'm just frustrated in how this was handled. I'll likely just have them finish them at this point, but I'd love to have options in the future.
