Stuck exhaust valves.
« on: March 05, 2007, 10:48:25 PM »
I have 3 exhaust valves that won't move. Springs are off and they won't slide down the guides. Any ideas short of a dead blow hammer to remove them? This the same motor I had to press the pistons out of - arghhhh!
Thanks,
Cliff.

Sorry, Bro........ I hate it when that happens.

If they don't have visible crap on them....... then whack um. Or look for another organ donor.

Get a proper measuremnt for the clearance between valve and guide after you whakum.

Before you punch them out, see that the top/tip of the valves are not mushroomed larger than the stem. It can destroy the guide.

This usually happens whet the constant hammering of the rocker on the end of the valve stem has caused an imperceptible mushrooming of the end of the stem.
DON'T hammer the valve out as this will score the valve guide,
Carefully dress the sides of the stem with fine emery until the valve will slide out.
Remember to clean away any emery dust that has been caused.

If you mean that the valves are stuck shut and wont open hit the stem end with a soft faced hammer

If you mean they slide but wont come out dress the stem end as described

Maybe it's just me, but if the valves are stuck, wouldn't it be wise to replace the guides at the same time?

Thanks guys, always good advice here. The valve stems are not mushroomed, the motor has been sitting under a workbench for over 30 years and has some rust inside. I was able to push one valve out by hand and it looks ok except for the carbon deposits on the head of the valve. I was reluctant to go about my usual way of bashing things with a hammer for a change. It appears that a hammer is reasonable this time and changing the guides will most likely have to be done if the valves are going to be stubborn. Strangely the intake valves are all ok.
Cheers,
Cliff.

You're screwed just like me. Started trying to fix an oil leak and had to rebuild the complete motor.

Back to the valves, I ordered new exhaust guides, the newer ones that accept an oil seal. If you plan on keeping the existing ones feel for nicks with your fingers all around the stem and dress with a file. Then whack at it delicately.

Hey Cliff,

How did you manage to get the valves out? 3 of my exhaust valves will slide but refuse to come out. The idea of valves and hammers together makes me nervous

cheers
