ok. another update. I got the carb back on the bike and it took a lot longer than expected. I think i'm gonna try to run pods. what pods is everyone running and what jets do you guys think i should use with a 4-2 / pods exhaust? and where do you find em? I did get to hear the bike run today though. she ran pretty rough and gas was still pouring out of #1 carb so they gotta come off again. Sorry for all the questions guys, but I'm just wanting to get this thing runnin soon.

I think that the general idea is the k&n pods as they have built in velocity stacks. Before you go this route, try searching for stacks, pods. best oil for sohc cbXXX, best tires etc,

As far as jetting I cant help you. Did mine at a dragstrip with 6,000 ft elevation.
run the stock and go from there.

The last of the 650 SOHC4's had non adjustable carb floats, if you can hear liquid in them you are screwed!
I think you will have to replace the lot, though how all 4 ended up with gas in them is a puzzle.
I had the older 79 CB650Z and a later custom 650, one float on the Z sank and I ended up buying a full set of old carbs for $50, swapped out the one float and never had any more trouble..
I seriously think you will run into trouble trying to replace the "T" pipes between the carbs as it is hard enough wrestling the 4 carbs in but if they continually spring a leak it will break your heart pulling them all the time.

FYI pods make the carbs a breeze to remove. Unless its a 81/82 I intend to drive long distances I'll run pods on them. Not my 80. tried it once and it was a hassle.
Yes look at the "T's" but if they look good dont mess with them.

So I ran the bike today. Actually got to ride it for the first time. I was defiantly surprised how fast it is. But now I've got a new problem. After I parked it in the garage, I noticed a damn oil leak. It looks like it's comin from the counter sprocket shaft. And guess what. It's obsolete. Go figure. Anyone know where to find one???

you sure it's not coming from the shifter shaft seal, tis a common thing, and close by the countershaft seal. failing that, get the specks on the old seal, I'm sure you can find a replacement somewhere.

Ok. So I went ahead drained the oil. The PO had 5qts in there. I have no clue why. But I went ahead and put 3 in and started the bike. Started perfectly. No sign of an oil leak. Sweet. The bike ran like a champ for about 2 miles than all hell broke loose. The damn thing would not stay running. It would run with full choke for about 25 seconds than die. Mind you I was 2 miles from home. Those 2 miles took forever to get back. I got plenty of weird looks too. Does anyone have any idea where to start with this one???

+1 on fuel issue. If you had old gas you may wanna check your tank and petcock fot crap. Also i'd try taking off the gas fill cap when this happens, the vent may be clogged then fuel can't flow due to the vacuum. Iv'e actually just come in from working on my carbs, the slow and idle circuts are clogged and i cant get anything through em. Labor of love

Well I can't take my cap off while the engines running. My cap is the locking style and once it's off the tank it won't forfeit the key. I've looked at the cap and I can't even tell how you would take it apart and clean it.

What ever happened to your floats that had fuel in them?
I have a set of carbs from a '79 that you can use. The distance between them is different than my '81., but I believe the insides are the same. Can anyone verify this?
Let me know and i'll send them out to you. Also you might be able to use the "t's" too.

Side note about the tees, ive got a set on my carbs i concocted from vacuum tees and hoses. I'm gonna try the aquarium tubing and see how it holds up.

In addition to the different spacing, the 79 and 80 had mechanical carbs, while the 81 had 82 had CV carbs. I havent had a set of the CV carbs in my hands, but from photos they look quite different than the mechanical ones.

I swapped out the floats for some without any fluid in them. No gas leak. How do you go about cleaning the fuel cap? And I've got another problem. I can hold pipes 2-3 while it's running. I took a good plug and checked all for plug wires and I've got spark on all 4 when it's grounded against the jug. Plugs are wet so theyre getting fuel but there is no fire. Think I should try new coils?

coils ,pulse generators or ignitors. There is 2 complete systems there so you can swap connections around and when the problem moves to 1 and 4 thats the problem.

Yes and the pulse generators are under the right crank cover the plugs are along the frame.

They turn up on ebay. I just sold a set last summer. I can look around next week and see if I have anymore.
