« on: December 08, 2011, 11:50:27 PM »
hey guys this has sorta been covered but not quite, can I use cb750 hub(1976) and a 1976 gl1000 rim and spokes? Or do I need different spokes? Thanks

You will need new spokes! BUT if you are building a CAFE or a bobber you can use the whole front end with dual disc on the CB750. You will need to change the bearings and races but the early GL frontends will fit.

I have been doing some reading on this and get more confused the more I read.  What year(s) are considered early?  I have read that anywhere from 75 to 78 is ideal yet when I look for them I see some with spokes and some with comstars(?).  I have a '74 CB750 that I would like to swap an entire GL front end onto and keep the spoked wheels.  Do all of the GL's have the air suspension on the front?  Can or would you want to do away with the air suspension?

75-76 are the year I know work as that is what I have. The cbx 1000 lowers will bolt on to the 750 forks if you want a swap. Not all are air suspention, it may just be a case of new plugs in the fork tops as a fix. The comstar and spokes exist on the early models just found the spoked wheels harder to find. But the comstars are stable. Definately get the SSH 750 tapered bearing. Good luck!

early is usually 75-79 but the 75-77 rims and fork and brakes all the same 78-79 brakes and rims are different (comstar) and don't mix. 78-79 will swap with each other. Just not with the 75-77.
I don't think you can just put on a comstar on a 75-77 (Spoke) without changing the forks and brakes also.

sorry for the vague post but heres what I was wondering, I have a 750 with a 16 inch rear wheel. Would putting a gl1000 rim I'm the back be as easy as relacing the hub with the gl1000 spokes? Or do I need custo sizes?

From this thread on Caferacer.net;

The rules with GL1000 front end swaps is that:

- only the 75-77 GL1000 gold wing front end is a true bolt on.
- the brake/fork system has to all be from the same bike (75-77). that means rotors, calipers, brackets, forks, axles all have to be from the same bike. wheel can be either from a cb750 or a GL1000. They look slightly different but the dimensions are the same.
