Topic: lost key to gas tank and seat lock, any suggestions?

Is there a key code to either of these locks anywhere?  It's a 1978 CB550K.  The ignition was changed so that key is different.  I know I can go to a locksmith and have a key made but If could find the code that would be helpful.

Try to remove the 10mm nuts that attach the lock to the seat. Once you can flip the seat up, you can remove the lock and take it to mr. locksmith.

There should be a tiny engraved number on the seat lock, usually starts with a letter. Take that onto eBay and you can find vendors there who have Honda keys for a couple bucks.

The number on the inside of the seat lock is 7RF819, but i don't see anything on ebay when I search that number and keys.

If the fuel tank has a lid similar to the '77/'78 750, any Honda key will work.

sometimes ebay vendors dont actually type out the key numbers on the page, but have a photograph of a page with the numbers listed.  Then you cant search by the number. Thats how I found mine at least.

All you need is the last three digits of the code, 819.  Call a local locksmith and ask them if they can cut the key for you.  Normally they have access to the codes but sometimes they may not have blanks.  There was a guy on the forum recently who got keys cut at a hardware store, so you never know.

As stated before, the tank cover will work with just about any Honda key.  Also FYI, the ignition switch has a chrome front, which extends down the sides of the switch barrel.  It takes some work to get at it but way down there in a small font is a similar code, and again it's the last three digits that are what's needed. 

Of course, it always best to take the lock with you if you can.

Even a small knife blade will open my tank, no problem.  That saved me once when my keys vibrated out of the ignition and were lost in Mississippi.  I was able to get home to Birmingham only because I was able to opent the tank with my knife when I needed gas.

Ha Ha Sha Sha sharad Uahhh. I'm headed to look for a sohc4 in  ....... with key number 7RF819, as soon as it comes in the mail.

Or a screwdriver, nail file, etc.etc.etc. having taken apart a broken one to see if I could machine a new one(the mounting flange broke off) I can tell you there is no lock bits in there.
