Points cover question
« on: December 20, 2011, 07:30:00 AM »
Looking at points covers and I see some cast metal CB650 covers that look like they'd fit a CB500/550. The holes are in the right place anyway, at ~4 and 10 o'clock.
Does anybody know if the ~'81-82-ish cast covers (as opposed to the thin chrome stuff) from a CB650 will fit a CB550?

tried it once on my 74 it did not fit directly but I think it could be modified to fit I just did not have the time to mess with it and I still have a good chrome cover for mine so it was not a real high priority at the time I just liked the cast idea at the time

What kept it from fitting correctly?

A CB650 cast points cover fits perfectly on my 400f, and a CB550 chrome points cover had previously fit perfectly on my 400f. So by association.....the answer should be "yes". You just need to rig something as a gasket.

A CB650 cover will also fit on a CB750 fit is perfect, but the Honda logo is on an angle.  I bet they are all about the same size diameter.

Yeah, but I think the mounting holes for the 550 and 750 are different. The 650 holes appear to be in the same place as the 550.

Maybe Vames can confirm this....did the Honda logo libe up correctly? What did you do about a gasket? (I'm sure I can figure that out pretty easily....)

I think I put a little bead of Yamabond (or something else that never hardens around the edge). I have a Dyna ignition, so I hopefully won't be opening it for years and I'm not as scared of getting a bit of water in there like I would be if I had points, but I still felt it's worthwhile to seal it with something. At some point, I'll probably trace and exacto a proper paper gasket to fit in there.

Scott,

Your right the holes are not in the same place the cover ends up on an angle.  The hole spacing is the same though its the placement that is incorrect.  When I took a CB650 stator cover and put in on my CB750 the Honda logo is at a 45 degree angle and not parellel to the ground.  Just wanted to see if it would work.

Hmm...

So it lines up wrong on the 750, but the original poster was asking about the CB550. As I said above, I've used a 550 cover and it lined up on my 400F, and I've used a 650 cover and it lined up on my 400f, so by logic the 650 cover should line up on the 550.

Picked up a nice on cheap from ebay. I'll see how it goes when it gets here. I have a Pamco and may try the Yamabond or a home-made gasket deal.

Not that I'd ever want to get water under the points cover at all, but with points all it takes is a little spritz of water to render them temporarily useless. With an electronic ignition, it would have to get pretty wet in there for it to stop working.
