Engine Problem??
« on: December 23, 2011, 08:26:19 PM »
well I was injecting Marvel Mystery Oil into the cylinders of my CB500 for winter prep.  I had to remove the tach cable to make it easier to get the spark plug out on number 3.  oops, the washer from the screw holding the cable on fell into the cylinder area.  aftere I got the plug out I became concerned that the washer may have fallen into the cylinder.  I put a magnet into the plug hole to try to fish it out.  No success.  Should I take the head off to confirm that the cylinder is clean or should I just run the bike and blow the washer out?

Only if you want to screw that cylinder! :o
Somehow that little sucker has to be removed, I'd keep at it with the magnetic fishing thing, even if you have to get a stronger magnet, leaving anything in that bore will eventually end up down the side where the rings are and jam scoring the bore forever.
Sorry that has to come out, try hand cranking the motor until the piston is at the top, don't spin it with the starter motor or kicker as the chance is that the washer will move down the side of the piston.
Also check that it "did" fall down there and is not just lying in the fins area...merry Xmas.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Perhaps turn the engine over by hand until that piston is at TDC.  Could make it easier to fish that washer.  +1 to DONT RUN IT!!

a longish q tip..maybe tied to some thing with good thick axle grease should fish it out. pull the tank and make sure it isnt burried in some crevice first. been there done that in similar situations. yea it sucks.
good luck!
