Decided to keep it....
« on: December 21, 2011, 03:55:17 PM »
Well, I was going to sell the 1977 cb550k I just acquired with only 6,500 miles, but the deal fell through so I'm keepin' this baby! Ordered a new lower left pipe today. I'll tear the carbs off tomorrow. Gonna keep it stock except for the bars and maybe a few other small details. The thing I don't like is the design of the tank decal. Is there a good way to get that thing off? Also, thinking about wrapping the pipes all the way down to the mufflers just to see what it looks like. :)

Good decision to keep  , but leave those sweet pipes alone, they look great just the way they are. Those decal will come off  of that tank, with a little sanding.

Any way to get them off without sanding?

I was watching, the bids went up to $1200, right?  What happened?

I ended up buying a K5 in Rochester for $850, which is what I had in mind to offer you.

A  few of things on the bike like the small indent in the tank and a cracked jug fin turned the buyer off and made me feel uncomfortable completing the sale. No big deal, I'll get it up and roaring this spring. If I could only get the damn seat to pop up I could get started!!

My tank is in great shape. I just hate the orange and gold decal

The decal isn't on the outer surface of the paint, it's under the clear.  You can't just remove the decal.

If wrapping the pipes was a good thing I'm sure Honda would have done it years ago, leave that stuff to the Egyptians and let them headers shine man. :)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I actually like the orange and gold.  If I had a 550 tank I'd trade ya.  And +1 on keeping the pipes unwrapped....I just can't dig that style.  Beautiful bike sir.  Glad you're keeping it.

Wrapping the pipes would make that 8.5 out of 10 bike look like a 6.5...jmo..

The reason I was considering wrap was due to the fact that the left two headers don't look like they will clean up to where they might "shine" :(

Well, I stared and stared at this bike today. Can't decide what to do first. I guess getting the damn seat to pop up would be a good start. It's cold here so I don't want to give up my garage for a couple of months at least. I was thinking maybe some some things I could do in the basement. Carbs, some polishing, etc. I can't get to any of that without the seat off. Any ideas?

you can remove the screws to the locking mechanism under the seat. The PO of my bike did that and it came right off. You can then put back on when you get a key for it. I take it that is why it cant be opened?
How were you aboe to order a new lower left pipe? Thought Honda didnt make these anymore?

have you tried pushing down on the seat (possibly, you might have to push really hard!) while turning the key?  ...my 550 is like that...
If it works good, it looks good...

It is possible to remove the pins in the seat hinge and get in that way. No key?

I have the key, but the only thing it doesn't work in is the seat. I am going to try the hinges and pins tomorrow. I am hoping some aluminum foil will shine up the headers.
