... without taking off the 4-1 header? I don't want to prop it up on the oil filter housing. The oil pan is too far back and I'm not sure I'd want to do that anyway.. There's a narrow space where the lower motor mount bolt goes - maybe an inch across - that I could fit a jack stand longways into, but at best that would be in the middle and not very stable.

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

Jack stands under the pegs I think work! So does some tie down straps from the ceiling to the handlebars.

I've done it several ways.  I've used jack stands under the frame (but in your case that won't work), I've also used a chain hoist in the celing or tie strap from a rafter, but I think in your case I would use my other method balast.  Just put something fairly heavy on the seat as far back as it can go, it will keep the front safely off the ground.  Last time I did that I used a short heavy punching bag worked great.

Floor jack with a piece of 2x4 works.  Or straps from the ceiling.

I like that oil filter bolt, btw. :)

Straps to triples from the ceiling for the win.

Jack with a piece of wood under the oil filter a dozen or more times, no issues. There's not more than a few pounds of weight at that point when sitting on the center stand. Put your hand under the oil filter, with the bike on the center stand, and lift up. This will give you an idea how little effort is required to lift from this point.

Yup that's always been my point. You can put a weight like loaded saddlebags on the rear to help. Once the front wheel is off there is very little weight on the filter housing.

I like the hangem from the ceiling idea, but that restricts movement, assuming you want some. If its just fork seals, maybe you don't want any movement.

Great! I'm good for something!  :D  I've used the saddlebags trick, as I have them, but also a toolbox bungied to the luggage rack.

I have done that several times. I put her on the center stand and put a bag of something on the back. When you remove the front wheel she wants to tip back anyway. If I am using my Sears Motorcycle lift, I put a jackstand  under the swingarm. The bikes are back heavy even though they look front heavy with the motor tilted forward.

I use a cargo ratchet. Bike on center stand. Hook one end to inside garage door handle (2 inches from ground), then hook the other end through both sides of grab bar in a loop. ratchet just until front tire is off ground.
