Your first mistake was using brillo. Use a bar of soap instead and hold it with extended needle nose pliers, or just change the belt and make sure the new on is nice and tight.

As I take this, you were working on a motor that had a spinning belt due too it was RUNNING right?!?!  :o

well ok..... i use uber tuff drive belts and from the get go they squeak a little bit.... so periodically while the engine is running i hold a brillo pad and resurface the belt and it stops the squeak when i turn on the car. (its like a 1 second squeak buts idk its a personal problem lol)

anyways i must have lost focus and the brillo pad started to come apart and then went into the next pulley pulling my hand and finger in  :P

yep been there done that..ok not exactly that. had a bracket "clamped" in a vice once for drilling. end result was bracket slipping and getting 7 stiches in my finger!! hell if you never do anything..guess nothing will ever happen. hope you heal up soon!

Wire wheel also strips skin off your hands much faster than rust from steel.  Tested by myself :)
