odd cb650 camshaft question...
« on: December 22, 2011, 02:37:06 AM »
Hi all,

Bit of a strange one but someone might know the answer. I'm looking to do the tried and tested '650 camshaft in a 550 head mod' and have sourced a cb650 camshaft.
It turns out that it came from a German market 50ps (power save) model which ran at 37kw/50bhp as opposed the standard US version which ran 46kw/63bhp.

I know that the cam lobe diameter on this model camshaft measures about 33.1mm as opposed the larger one which is about 35.6mm.

My question therefore is does this 'power save' version offer any improvement over the standard cb550 model camshaft? Does anyone know the diameter of the 550 cam lobes and would there still be improved duration on on this type of 650 camshaft.

Thanks

Here's a thread with just about everything I've been able to gather on the 550 and 650 cams.

There's another thread somewhere that has the "ps" cam specs, but I don'tr remember how they compare to the stock 550 cam.

Thanks for the info, though it doesn't quite answer whether the 50hp cam would still provide an improvement over the stock 550 cam. Doing a search for other posts suggests not.

Cam hasn't been bought yet as I was unsure about this information.

IMHO the ps cam would not be an improvement to your bike. hold off and get the regular one. I've got a spare in the garage but shipping would probably be a killer.

 Here's the thread with specs:

Looks like the 'ps' version is only marginally bigger than the stock 550 cam.

Think that may be the wrong link though it was very informative thanks!

Gonna steer clear of the 50hp one then, thanks for all the advise.

As I mentioned before, I don't own the camshaft as I wanted to clarify this info before buying.

She's all yours -
