Another snapped clutch rod...(cb500)
« on: December 21, 2011, 09:29:00 PM »
So I've searched quite a bit and read a lot regarding this topic, and have seen suggestions such as machining a new rod, to placing a ball bearing in between the broken piece, and what should be remaining piece, to trying to find a source to buy a replacement (although I'm not exactly sure how to go about replacing it).

My question is....if I put the short broken piece in where it came from, and push like hell to actuate the clutch, should it move inward? Is this doable manually without the clutch cable and all connected?

The main reason I ask is that if I put the broken end of the rod into the case and push as hard as possible, I get NO movement what so ever.  I'm wondering if the clutch plates could be adhered (ie rusted) together, as this bike has sat for several years before my aquiring it.  Or maybe I'm just off entirely on how the mechanics of this system works?

Much thanks in advance for all you guy's help.

if you havent had this bike running, and its broken two clutch rods?or is that just the title?id remove the clutch cover and dissemble the clutch,,you wont be able to manually just push on that rod by hand either even if the clutch was new and perfect, the pressure required is too much for even superman, thats why the clutch rod breaks, that cork screw affair on the gear shift side that adjusts the clutch wears a lot aswell,,its a hardened steel screw in a die cast alloy female thread, they lose travel/action as they wear.

Thanks Dave,
This bike has sat for 5-6 years or so, and according to the PO, ran fine with some carb isssues before being parked.

I acquired it last December, but since have bought a house, had my first born, etc....limiting my time available for this build.  I finally heard the bike run for the first time last week, and am in the process of doing some minimal tuning to try to make it run "right", but in the mean time am addressing several other issues that need to be fixed/repaired.

I figured replacing the clutch would be in order at some point regardless....as I understand it, they're not exactly the strong point of the cb500's anyway.  I found the clutch rod snapped once I opened up the sprocket cover, and have yet to replace it, so only the one rod has snapped as far as I'm aware.  Once I finish putting the front end back together, I'll look into tearing into the clutch.  Thanks again.

Jbird2200: I just replaced the push rod in my CB500K2. I used a new rod from a CBR1000RR (part# 22850-MEL-000). About three quarters of an inch of one end will need to be sanded or ground down slightly to fit into the center piece of the pressure plate. The new rod is much longer than the original so it will need to be cut to length with a cut-off wheel. This will also provide a square end to index into the lifter mechanism. It works great.

Great, well I guess that gives me another option.  I saw the "how to" make a clutch rod for the cb500, but it seemed there was some discrepancy between what size rod to use.  I really need to get inside the clutch itself to see how it looks before I go replacing parts, but it'll need to be done eventually regardless.

If you don't mind me asking...how much did that RR rod set you back?

Jbird2200: I paid less than $20 for the push rod from my local Honda shop.
