650 cam swap help
« on: December 21, 2011, 04:26:33 PM »
Hi I'm trying to swap the cam in my 550 for a 650 and i ran into a little problem.

The lock-nut and screw for the cam adjusted broke and i don't know what to do or how to get it off. Any ideas?

I'll be starting from scratch (well, at least new psitons/rings, head, etc.) but why do you even need to mess with the cam chain adjuster?
Why not just undo the bolts on the cam sprocket, slide out the 550 cam and then slide in the 650 cam?

Forgive me if I'm wrong...haven't been in there myself...YET. So this is more of a question than an answer.

youll need to relieve any or as much tension from the chain as you can scott to replace the cam,the cam holds the cam wheel in place under tension,it dosent just sort of hover in mid air when the cam is removed,,has the screw broken 1234 and spinning with the nut or just sort of fouled up on those last threads and binding?if the screw is spinning itll need a new tensioner assembly,if its just binding on the threads try winding that lock nut back in and cleaning up the exposed threads?it might have even just stripped the little fragile sector gear that works the tensioner,,and once the assembly is out it might be able to be dodgy repaired(read mcguyver)back into operation and last.

I've tried that but the chain is on there so tight I have to room to slide the sprocket aside plus I need to replace some gaskets so I need the thing off.

So it just keeps spinning and spinning, so Ill need a whole new tensioner? should i just drill out the old screw and use an extractor to back it off?

it sounds like the little gear has stripped inside, with both cam bolts removed you should be able to knock the wheel sideways and relieve the tension, youll have to try and split that nut or cut the entire thread off to remove the tensioner now.
