Neutral light under load in gear
« on: August 01, 2016, 09:15:34 am »
Anyone have any ideas?

I replaced the neutral light switch due to an oil leak.  It worked great for a couple hundred miles, but I was under break-in still.  Now when I get on it and I'm under load in 2nd and 3rd, the neutral light will come on.  If I lift it goes right out.  It still functions normally in neutral, and there are zero problems with shifting.

Thanks!

is the wire grounding somewhere else?
did you clean/check the connection at the end of the wire?

I had this issue recently. Tried a few different (used) switches, all with the same results. The o-ring is borderline too fat for this location, and there are a couple of subtle tricks to getting the switch to fully seat. The first trick is to place the o-ring in the lower case first, then insert the switch. This helps prevent the o-ring from bulging out or hanging on the lip. The second trick is to lightly tap on the switch as you snug down the retaining tab bolt. Just a couple light taps with a small block of wood as you snug the bolt is plenty, don't get too aggressive with this, those switches ain't cheap.

One last thing is to check the diode. In its stock position it hangs off the back of the battery box. My diode failed and the neutral light was always on. A quick check for the diode is to put the bike in gear with the key on (does not have to be running). If the neutral light is on, with the bike in gear, does the light go out when you pull in the clutch lever? If so, you likely have a bad diode.

Thanks.  I don't see a chaff anywhere, and the end was cleaned thoroughly when I installed it.

The o-ring is certainly bigger than the original, but since it was leaking I was happy with that.  I saw the tips on installing, and did put in the o-ring first.  I will try to reseat it and see if that helps.

The light is only on when it is in neutral (good) or if I'm under load at higher RPM (above 5500ish) in 2nd or 3rd.  When I lift or shift it goes out.

Sounds like a bad switch grounding internally or you have some wire insulation cut and/or it's grounding out where it should not. The shift drum could be side loading a defective switch?
