Update from last year re: new harness. So far all has gone well and 600 miles later the new harness/new battery/new rectifier is doing just fine with no more electrical meltdowns.

So this weekend I took the K2 out for a Fall ride to CT to see the New England Motorcycle museum - weather was perfect 70F, breezy and blue skies. I had been hearing a weird intermittent metal on metal noise the past few weeks while riding to work (via highway) - sounded like it was coming from under the tank somewhere but couldnt quite pinpoint it and decided it would become apparent the more I rode it  8).....so I set off on this 3-4 hr ride and got about 20 min into it when I felt a clunk/jolt coming from the left side. It was that same noise you when you leave the sidestand down and it hits something when riding so I thought maybe that had been it....continued a mile down the road and i had a 50-60 mph section where I would the bike up to see if I could hear any metal noise and then when I came to the firsts top light it happened again...clunk/jolt....ok not good and time to turn around and head home. I limped home carefully fearing something catastrophic - after all this is the cursed K2 (alternator failures/engine bearing failures/engine head leaks/harness melting at the rectifier etc etc...)....

Got home put the bike on center stand and spun the wheel...quickly discovering the problem....I was missing a link in the chain....it was hanging on by one pin  :( see pics below....

Lucky for me I had a spare X-chain sitting in the shelf and installed that without too much drama and after rivet the link took it for a 14 mile test look - no weird metal-noise, no clunk/jolt...all good! I changed the oil just for good measure (it was due) and found no metal shavings  ;D. So....minor drama this time with the cursed K2 and hopefully the list of failures is getting smaller!

Good question its been many years since the chain was installed (bike not ridden much in last 10 years due to all the issues) but I would typically buy a rivet style chain.

Yes at some point Ill change the sprockets but bike will be parked for winter in about 2 weeks as weather has changed here in Boston.

Boy, that was close!
A parting chain often ruins the crankcases(!). I only know of one instance where a guy's masterlink unclipped and lost the cover link like yours and he just came to a stop, unharmed.

That chain is a strong one.
My K6 has one, 28.000 km later no sign to give up.

I replaced a chain I killed at 25.000 km due to Ultima Chain Wax. That chain was a little bit stronger, but chains and sprockets needs lubrication.
Loss of good lube affected the x-rings. It went quick after that.

I should have continued to use Motorex chain lube strong spray as I did before and after.

My K6 has broken chain twice. At a burnt out attempt 1980, new Tsubaki chain. Engine stock

On Autobahn when gearing down 2 steps followed by WAT to catch up speed after slow going trucks. 836cc and ca 75-80whp.
Chain snapped. It had stretch much  and I had not adjusted it at last stop. "Next stop" was not a good plan. DID 50HDS o-ring chain.

Rolled to a parking lot beside road and waited for oil. No oil. Got lift by a biker to nearby town Kassel to buy a new chain.

Today's x-chains does not stretch much or at all.
