Front wheel install / question about speedo pickup
« on: March 20, 2011, 03:41:01 PM »
I was installing the front wheel today and am reminded that the speedo pickup unit is free to spin around the axle until the speedo cable is hooked up.

Is that the way it is supposed to operate?

To phrase another way, the only thing that really keeps it from spinning round all the time is the cable itself.  Have I assembled it improperly?  The Clymer manual offers no help.

1974 CB750.

Hopefully this link will work.  This is a short video of the wheel demonstrating how the pickup is not held in place.

And this is to demonstrate that it still moves after installing and tightening the wheel.  The only thing keeping it from spinning around is the cable itself:

To be honest, my K4 does not move once the axle has been tightened to spec.

Your first video is correct. Once the axle nut is tightened down, the speedo drive becomes one with the axle. It is part of the "spacer stack" that runs thru the hub.

The second video presents a problem. Once the axle is clamped in the lower legs, the speedo drive should be locked in place, as the axle is locked in place. That is why you have to make sure the drive is pointing back and level as when the axle clamps are tightened it cannot move.

Or at least its not supposed to.

I did go out and checked my K2 just to be sure, and it is locked in place.
