Hi All,

I've been lurking on this site for a few months and I finally got around to picking up two very ratty 550's a couple weeks ago. One is a '77 550F, the other is a '78 550K. Neither of the bikes have been on the road in years so they should be fun projects. At first I wanted to go the whole custom cafe route but now I'm thinking I won't do anything that can't be reversed. I'm leaning towards just upgrading the suspension, adding a 4-1 exhaust, probably doing a custom seat and possibly the tank. I'll probably be riding two up every now and then so I'm trying to come up with ideas for a cafe looking seat and tail section that still fits two riders.

Way back in High School/College I had a CB400/four that I used to ride all over the back roads around LA and Ventura counties. I wish I still had that bike. The license plate was 5M7949 if anyone ever runs across it.

I've already picked up a ton of good info from this site and look forward to learning more.

Hi Steve,

Welcome to the boards and the SOHC addition!  Endless useful information on this site.

Where in San Diego are you?  I live up in North County and just started another '75 550k rebuild myself.  Always good to have another person in the area to help with a project, and share ideas (and tools) with.

Is your second bike a parts bike?  I have a friend that is looking for another project in the area.  Would you consider selling your least favorite?  Anyway, let me know if you wanna have a beer and wrench.

Hey Pete,

I'm in the Scripps Ranch area. I'm hoping to get both of them running before deciding what to do with the second bike. If all goes well, I'll keep the 'F' and sell the 'K'. Right now the DMV is giving me a hard time about registering one of the bikes. I bought both of them in Nevada and the DMV is telling me the 'K' should have an emissions sticker somewhere since it is a '78. I haven't found it yet and I find it hard to believe bikes had them back then.

How's the progress going?  I've got my bike running great and am up for a ride in the east county if you've got a functional bike ready for the road.
