chrome spray paint - are any 'close'?
« on: June 03, 2015, 10:00:07 AM »
The chromed reflector in my brake light housing is shiit, and I want to refresh it.
Are there any chrome spray bombs that are close to chrome?

I have tried multiple "chrome" paints and have found them all to suck in comparison with what the can cap shows.  Since you are repairing in a non visible area why not use some metallic tape called Chrome Brite by the TrimBrite company.  Its available at most auto parts stores and sticks great to a cleaned (acetone or alcohol, ect) surface.   I installed some trim lines with it on my speedo and tach bezels which I had to paint black on my K5 (Shiny new ones are out of my price league and used ones are crusty like mine were).  It shines like chrome and has been on for three years now.  It dressed up the bezels.  I bet it would work good on a reflector too!
Ya can travel near or ya can travel far; but no matter where ya go thar ya are!

Thanks for the info, Boot.  Sounds like a good option. I'll look into it.

I had the same problem and saw the chrome cap on the spray paint can and decided to give it a try. The reflector just came out silver. I still run it like that. I didn't put much effort into it, so I may have just done it wrong. There's some new stuff called Spectra Chrome, but I think it's more of a professional painter thing.

I remember seeing someone use some shinny silver foil paper or something like that and glued it inside the housing. Like the inside of a chip bag shinny, maybe check Michaels?

I've seen pretty good chrome(ish) coating from professional powder coaters.

thanks guys.
As this is a part not visible, i'm going low tech/low cost.  All if its luster is gone.  I think my PO(S) at some point, tried to polish it, and it left it with a sanded finish  ::)  Anything is better than its current condition.

The chrome powders look somewhat close to chrome but they require a clear coat. The clear coat just kills it totally, loosing about 20% of it's "pop". I've seen pics on the forums of stuff coated that looks amazingly good and I'd put money on the fact that all the good looking pics are without the clear and it won't look good for very long without a clear coat on it. There is no chrome powder that is close to chrome plating. If they ever do come up with that and a good anodize Gold I'll only work another 12 months and then retire.

With some lightly pitted chrome, sometime what I do is clean it real good, spray it with chrome paint.  Then rub it with some 0000 steel wool, till the paint is off the chrome, but still in the pits.  The paint sticks to the pitted areas better.

Doesn't look perfect, but instead of little black/rust spots, I have silver spots that are harder to see.

Duplicolors chrome is the closest paint I have found for Chrome. It is a one step, it can not have a clear on it.
