Clutch Basket
« on: December 26, 2016, 05:56:12 pm »
Are there any variances in clutch baskets between years or a K vs F 550?

I am installing my Barnett kit and there is a fiber plate with tabs that are significantly wider than the slot on the basket.

I hoodwinked some pictures as an example. They are attached. One is notched at the top of each opening and the other is not. Mine is not.

Huh, never thought that was a possibility.
Explains why my ebc clutch plate had one disc with a wider tab.

Yes, 77-78 has one plate with larger tabs.

So that top picture is a 77-78.

Interesting. The things you learn.

I will have to reach out to Dynoman and see if I can get another small tabbed fiber plate so I can run an extra...

Especially for the 'F' models it is important to determine what model you have: F, F1 or F2 as clutch underwent modification. Therefore check Parts Lists: http://www.honda4fun.com/materiale-documentazione-tecnica/parts-list/parts-list-cb550. You'll need your enginenumber.

delta is right, there have been mods to the clutch and the only way to identify it is by engine number as they seem to have been changed even within the same model series bike sometimes. i learned it the hard way. the parts list is your friend.

in addition to the top disc with the wider tabs, some clutches also had that spring-loaded, wider damper plate within the stack. you won't get it with aftermarket kits and then end up with an awful lot of free space.

Engine Serial is CB550E-104xxxx
Frame is CB550-120xxxx
Build date is 8/74

That should give me a K0 if I am not mistaken. So from what I can tell no wider damper and a smaller tab top plate. I also still have the original plates so I can pull them out and double check thicknesses.

Ok, so I did some digging. Went through all the part fiches I could find and notated the part number for the 500's, 550K's, and the 550F's. Hopefully someone will find this useful (or at least interesting).

The 500K0-K2 had part number 22100-323-000. The CB550K0-K1 had part number 22100-374-000. From some searching online these look to be the same exact part. I know Honda pulled parts from other bikes and renumbered them. My assumption here is they used the 500 clutch basket designs on the early 550's.

The 500K3, 550K2-K4, and 550F-F2 all use 22100-390-000. This is the basket with the wider notch at the top of the basket. So, it looks like they made the switch in 76 to the new design. I looked where I could and it doesn't look like a superseded part.

Bike         Basket Part#
CB500K0   22100-323-000
CB500K1   22100-323-000
CB500K2   22100-323-000
CB500K3   22100-390-000
CB550K0   22100-374-000
CB550K1   22100-374-000
CB550K2   22100-390-000
CB550K3   22100-390-000
CB550K4   22100-390-000
CB550F     22100-390-000
CB550F1   22100-390-000
CB550F2   22100-390-000
