cb400f - Fitting the airbox
« on: February 07, 2019, 12:22:46 AM »
I'm in the final stages of reassembling my cb400f and I've hit a snag; I can't get the air box in position, since it does not want to fit from either side or from the top without significantly bending some of the attachments fixed to it which is obviously not the right thing to do.

I can't remember how I removed it.

The next thing I'm going to try will be to remove the rear wheel and plastic lower part of the rear mudguard and insert it through the gap in the frame members just above the swinging arm pivot.

Does this sound about right or has anybody got any magic tricks I've overlooked?

Thanks.

Ps I should have said the engine and carbs are in, so the route in from the front isn't possible without a lot of fiddly work with cables, mounting rubber clamps, etc. which I'd rather avoid if poss.

It doesn't help to remove the carbs put the airbox in and then the carbs last? That's how I usually do it on my 500. Removing the rear wheel and mudguard sounds like more work.

I always put the airbox on the carbs when they are off the bike, and then slide the assembly in the frame from the right side. In my eyes the only way to make sure the air inlet is as smooth as possible on all four carbs.

Apologies- misled you into thinking about the plastic airbox, when in fact I meant the metal air filter box (aka battery box).

The metal thing is so big when I took my bike apart it was the LAST thing I took off the frame. When I reassemble it’s going in first.

After a lot of fiddling around, it is possible to insert it from the left side provided it is rotated 90 degrees and the top right securing bracket is bent back an inch. Not ideal but it's there now.
