Regulator/rectifier mounting suggestions
« on: July 21, 2022, 05:05:53 PM »
Hey all,

As so many videos and posts instruct, I've just replaced my regulator and rectifier for the modern combo unit. However, I'm having a hell of time figuring out where to mount it in my stock ‘77 CB550. I don't want to resort to something hack like zip ties, but there simply isn't an obvious spot as I see it to mount It in  a professional way (short of custom steel fabrication).

I'd love some suggestions based on others experience.

Here's my suggestion. I don't know why you need to replace parts, but if undamaged, just put the OEM stuff on again. Ultrareliable, the OEM regulator performs even better than aftermarket products and... it will save you a lot of time...

check the place where the old one was mounted: the tab where the old one was bolted to, might work if you bend it down 90 degrees. the new one will be horizontally oriented then.

but yeah, i'd need a better reason to replace something than having it mentioned is some youtube vid. if the old one works and you have a lead/acid or gel battery there's no need to replace it. only lithium batteries need a different charging voltage.

if you use all the original wiring, starter and fuse holder that connect to the metal mount than I would try to find a mod to let the new unit fit.

if it does not have all that I would make a custom. I made mine out of aluminum for my combo unit and the starter relay since the fuses and wire plugs are not in that area now.

To demonstrate uniqueness and individualism, follow the crowd of “experts”.  Who is profiting from you tube videos?

Btw, all my bikes still use the stock regulator.  Though, I have had to replace the rectifier on a couple that were fried when I acquired the bikes.  I speculate they were jumped with reverse polarity. The regulators were all recoverable by undoing the poor adjustment made to them.

I mount them on the engine case above the clutch using longer case bolts. The reg/rec mount holes are the exact distance apart for a clean installation.
