Islander here
« on: June 10, 2009, 08:35:42 AM »
Long Island that is ;).  I started with a CL350 back in '73 and moved on to a  750K5 in '75.  I steadily rode that bike till 1979 until I met with some backtop trying to dodge a 1957 Chevy Nomad around an "S" turn - thank God for crash bars which took the brunt of the damage.  I sporadically rode it again until 1982 then parked it in the garage until 4 years ago when I rebuilt the carbs.  Back now on the resto again - need (of course) tires, brake hoses, caliper rebuild and that's about it.  Sourcing these parts on the forum on where to buy.  I also have a Harley Superglide which I bought in 2004.

Welcome, we forgive your Harley slip.  ;) What part of the island are you from? I grew up in Merrick on the south shore.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Hey Bob, North Shore western Suffolk - Huntington.

Yea, the Harley thing - never even thought of buying a new Bike but my Dad was a Harley rider "in the day" and a year after he passed away, I bought one.  But  :(, I don't fit the Harley image >:( - no tatoo's, no leather vest with a gazallion pins on it, plus  ::) I wear a full face helmet.  Here's my dad with his bike in a photo I estimate to be in the late 1930's.

ps. thanks for the welcome .

Great picture. My father rode an Indian back in the 30's, sadly no pictures of him on it though.

My tale is similar to yours, minus the mishap. I  have a '69 that I bought in '73 and rode until 1982. It sat in the garage for 22 years before I decided to try and get it on the road again. I've been riding for about 5 years now since her rebirth.

Welcome to the forum, nice bike the K5. Those crash bars save a lot us us back in the day. Same year I got run off the road on my K4 by a DUI. Fairing and bars save me.  Hey, My family is from just down the road from you. Stony Brook & Port Jefferson. Look for the last name Bayles and you will find us everywhere even if most of us are dead up there. Family was BIG in building ships.

Welcome from Westchester County. When I had a boat I used to cross the Sound and fish over in Huntington.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

Thanks all.  Tomorrow I'll be spray cleaning and dielectric greasin' all connections, putting the carbs and lines back on, front caliper back on, master cylinder and bleeding - yea right, maybe half of that will get done.  Right now, I just want to get her running again.  Before any real riding can get done though, I'll need the new tires and new brake hose(s).
But it'll be good enought to ride around the local neighborhood to make sure all is working.  Sure hope those carbs don't leak after the rebuild ::).

Greetings from Colorado by another Harley guy. Just ignore all the snide Harley remarks. Those guys are just jealous. My 2003 Fat Boy has been a great bike. Not any issues in 27,000 miles PLUS no, and I repeat NO oil leaks. Can't say that about my 750F with 30,000 original miles.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Of all God's creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the lash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat.
