Fork oil change for 400
« on: July 16, 2009, 11:49:09 AM »
I searched around found some info but not what I was looking for. Hopefully somebody has experience with this can just tell where to start my experimenting.

I just bought these from Kevin.

It sounds like 145 to 150cc's of fluid per fork tube is the right amount but I have a couple of tech questions.

1. What brand and type of fluid is recommended?

2. I weigh about 165 lbs, ride it like I stole it ;D and think the stock set up is a little to soft. I've read that changing the weight of the fluid can make adjustments. I know the preload adjusters will aid in this but can anybody tell me what weight I should try? Should I use stock weight? What is that BTW. :-[

I run 20w fork oil in my 350F/400F track bikes.  I pull the spring and collapse the fork and add oil to within 4" of the top of the fork leg.  Pump it a few times to make sure all of the air is out and then refill to 4" from the top.  Not sure how many cc's that is.

I've got 15W Bel-Ray filled to the stock level.  Also have the preload adjusters cranked in a couple of turns.  I really like this setup.  It doesn't wallow or bottom out but still takes the edge off most ripples.  The last track day I ran was 103 degrees outside and toward the end of the day I might have wanted the 20W.  I weight about 185 but probably don't push my bike as far as real racers like Triffecpa.
