To replace or not replace - Sprockets
« on: May 04, 2021, 05:32:04 PM »
To a novice like me these sprockets look ok, but not sure.  So from the picture, can you tell if they need to be replaced or not?

Yes, if you look at the semicircle at base of teeth it is "deformed" to one side

I have seen worse rear sprockets but not often. The front one, it's not so easy to say but just get a new one. And a chain of course. Best to always replace the chain and both sprockets.
bad sprockets will ruin a new chain quickly. A worn chain will damage new sprockets quickly.

I'd be tempted to keep that front sprocket, cheap bastard that I am. I guess I'd better buy some new ones and leave it at that.

A worn sprocket will shorten the life of a new chain. Sprockets are cheap compared to a good chain.

Depends on how "sphincterly challenged" or tightassed you are. I know a guy who on a "round Australia" trip back in the day only changed his sprockets when they were so worn they would no longer turn the chain.

Don't think I have seen a rear sprocket that badly worn before.  Yes, replace the sprockets.  If the sprockets (rear at least) are that worn, I would replace the chain as well.

Much obliged for the input.  New sprockets have been ordered.
