bought mine for $1,400.  with the tear down "frame off" new tank, seat, clubmans, rearsets, exhaust and lots of little parts that add up, I will have $5,000 in mine.  This does not include an engine repair or rebuild.  My engine was fine.

bottom line make a list of what you want with prices, figure out what labor will cost on things you dont want to or cant do yourself....and  set aside a budget for unforseen expenses.   it all depends on how far you want to go as most have stated.

That is the smart way to do it. 

Sadly, that is not how I've done it.  I just kinda took off running.  I keep telling myself "That's why they call it a project."
