Yamahahaha 1981 xs 1100 question
« on: May 22, 2006, 02:34:58 PM »
I agreed to fix my neighbors XS 1100, I'm not sure why (I think I feel bad that he keeps buying bikes that don't run) . . .  but now I have to do it.   Bike was properly stored for ten years.   Carbs are spotless, diaphragms are good, ignition timing is good, compression is good (between 155 and 165).  Bike idles great, but won't go (engine dies under load).

The only thing I think of is that the resistance on the coils is supposed to be 1.5 ohms and I'm getting 3 ohms.  Is that enough to make the bike not run?

Any other ideas?

If it starts and idles it probably isnt the coils. re-check the carbs, get a 5x loupe to check holes in jets. they may look OK but have corrosion/gum build up on the inside.
What colour are plugs? Does it have the Hitachi carbs? :(

Probably bad gas and still has some gum in pilot jets. may clear itself with use.

Now it's just chuckling at me.

Well, the bike seems to have fixed itself after re-cleaning the carbs, re-checking the air filter, AND adding some fresh gasoline.   Could it have been bad gas?   My neighbor is likely to have put whatever he had around in it.  Still has a bit of a flat spot off idle. . . but I bet a good tune up will sort that out.  Thanks for the help guys.
