A dead rat (or opussum, raccoon, etc.) tends to stink up a place too. Especially when they crawl up into a wall or ceiling cavity where they can't be found nor removed...

Good thing you installed a security system so soon. You may be paid a repeat visit by the lowlifes expecting to find a garage full of new tools!

I wouldn't be too hard on the old folks, they can really get set in their ways and it's hard to get them to change their minds on anything.  I would be upset with the complex management.  Sheetrock for dividing walls in a shared building?  That's asinine.  That is no security at all.  Make them buy you enough 3/4" plywood to cover that wall and screw it to the studs with 3" lag bolts.   And get it done before you replace all your tools.

Probably plywood would be a fire code issue. But it could be covered with drywall again to retain the fire resistance.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

They still are using a sheet of plywood to cover the hole. I kinda figured drywall was used to meet code but just one sheet? Even if a fire were to brake out on my side, it'll burn through the studs. Albeit, drywall is only fire resistant to and extent but at least cover both sides of the studs. It's doesn't do the drywall a lot of good when the stud burns away first. I expect it's just enough to meet the bare minimum standards.

I'm just trying to ride out my lease until August and hopefully by then I can find my own place. I'm freaking tired of leasing apartments. I want my own garage, damnit!

Good news is, I did get my settlement. It was just a little over what I claimed. I now have recovered nearly 90% of my tools.
