New Cam Chain Assembly
« on: December 30, 2011, 09:56:41 am »
I have 73 CB750K engine I'm working on (hone, new rings and some mild repair). I'm trying to make this a very low budget engine refresher. My questions is, at what point do I replace the cam chain and cam chain rubbers? What should I be replacing at minimum? The rubber is firm but not rock hard. Cam chain is endless and i'm not splitting the cases so I cannot report on its wear.

Thanks

Dan

The rubber bits would be good to do while apart and not terribly expensive. Cam chain should be fine, they can go many, many miles if engine is kept stock. How many miles do you think yours has?

As hard as it is to get to these 750 parts at least change the rubber parts.

actually, with this whole internet, finding parts isn't as painful as it was 10+ years ago....

I think what he is saying is that it is hard to actually get at the part since to do much of anything on these 750's,unless you have a frame kit,the engine has to be pulled out to do much of anything.  Parts are actually easier to get nowadays than they were in the pre internet period.

ah, I'm sorry, please excuse my misinterpretation.

I believe that the difficulty or challenge is why we all love to do what we do with these bikes. It's the journey of the unknown, the challenge, and finally overcoming (and the reward that comes with it).

but back to bikes. I'm going to have a solid inspection of the rubber bits first thing tomorrow. In regards to the cam chain, hmm...still on the fence..

Thanks for everyone's feedback!
