Repairing broken 400f sidestand tab
« on: January 06, 2012, 03:02:17 PM »
When I bought my 400f project, the sidestand tab was broken out of the frame. Took make matters worse, someone had tried a terrible repair with a chickens++t weld job that broke out again.  $00fs have the thinest frame I have ever seen! Apparently a common problem. Honda must have figured this out because the 77s had a reinforced tab. Went to the local wrecking yard and cut the section out of a frame from the front to rear motor mount. Cut the bad portion out (just the lower half) approx 6 inches long. Slid a piece of 1 inch OD tubing inside the hole as far as it would go each way and tack welded the bottom to hold it in place. Took a third piece and filled the center and tacked it. Cut the junkyard piece approx 1/8 inch smaller than the hole and welded in place. Ground down the weld and now is much stronger than before.

It is a very common problem with the 400 four :( :(  Water enters the frame and causes it to rot from the inside out.  Your method of repair is the way to go about it...Larry
