Hello from Sacramento, CA
« on: January 08, 2012, 01:02:41 PM »
I just received a Honda CB750K DOHC that was manufactured in 1980. It's got wire rims (badly rusted) and hasn't been started in about 9 years (although it was running when parked) It has been sitting in the weather for all this time. I took off the carburetors and there was some major crap inside them (with possible damage to one of the  aluminum pistons and bores) although the pistons seems to move freely now) The carb was previously completely frozen, I thought that the throttle cable was frozen with rust, but it was the carbs that were stuck. I cleaned then out pretty well, and put them back together (didn't want to wait too long for fear of forgetting exactly how they went) but they need some parts including air cutoff valves, new jets and the gaskets, etc. I want to take the cylinder heads off next, although maybe I will probably try to pressurize the cylinders and check percentage of pressure using a compressor first. There was some major grunge in the intake ports (maybe corrosion because of water?) and I'd like to take the head apart and at least re lap valves with lapping compound. It has 24,000 miles (I don't know if it is correct, but the previous owner said that 'somebody' had rebuilt it and mentioned that the rebuilder had a 'shady' reputation)
I'm presently short on money, but long on time (at least compared to the $$) and I'd like to take mostly everything apart, clean and adjust it. I don't have previous experience in motorcycles, but I'm pretty methodical and will make notes as I take things apart, and I have a downloaded service manual
It really needs a seat right away, and new tires and a battery, and a lot of cleaning. Does anybody in my area know of a good local (new or used) parts place? No matter how cheap I try to do this, I'm going to need a lot of parts to get this back on the road. I don't necessarily have to keep it stock for a seat and similar items as long as the parts work well.
Richard
I'll take some 'before' pictures and post them when I get a chance.

Howdy! :)

Glad you gave up the TV.

We like all things Honda but I'll bet you'll get more pertinent information here.
