I have found EBay not usually inexpensive, and not everyone uses it to sell their machines. I have had a good bit of luck with craigslist. I search everyplace within 3 hrs to see what is out there, I do this every night. Right now it seems that people are trying to move 750's in the northeast , allot of them well under a grand. I run 500's and 550's and always felt the 750 a bit bulky but at those kinds of prices I might consider a couple 750's in the barn. This is the time to buy bikes, not during riding season. Living in a barracks with no garage would limit you on the condition of your next machine at time of purchase for sure, but , you can bet somebody has a gem for sale cheap-you just have to find it. Good hunting!
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

Funny thing, when I searched cb500 in Portland the '71 with 38k miles shows up for $1000. I'd wait, I've seen nicer ones with titles for less. unless you're set on 500/550, this one is a better deal..

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/mcy/2774678749.html

1978 hondamatic 750 - $1300 (gresham)

A rare survivor. documented low miles.. 298 original. estate find. came with 1990 tags that were never put on. new tires mouted and balanced at pro caliber motor sports.. new front brake hose custom made. caliper cleaned..still have master to do. carbs cleaned and ready to put together. needs oil and filter.tank had rust so kreemed it. no fuel sender. New ones are still available through western hills honda. have old battery for core. Has highway bars and windshield. asking what I have into it. willing to sell as is. lots of potential to be a great bike. A good investment at this price. wheels are on. can be rolled. title in my name. bike available through February. will not be for sale after that. will consider reasonable offers. 503 757 6576

This one is even better, if I had cash I'd hit it now. I expect it'll be gone by tomorrow.

http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/mcy/2803230589.html

1979 honda cx500 D - $750 (Oregon City)

I have this honda cx500 deluxe I am selling for $750 its runs fine just needs carbs cleaned, new speedometer, and has a small tear in seat 10,811 miles. I am moving soon and cant take it with us.

Those aren't bad deals but neither interest me.  The Hondamatic isn't what I'm looking for and I'm set on the iL4 setup, I already have a V-Twin anyway :P.  As for size I'm fairly set on a 500 or 550 Four.

CB 550 1977 - 1978 models go cheap. +1 on being patient, I would not go for that one.

Touche Tews19.. I had not seen the Spokane bikes.   So if I'm correct the main difference between the 80's models and the 70's is primarily just the plastics?  Mechanically/frame wise they're all the same?

No. From '79 on the 750 was double overhead cam. Very little if anything from an 80's CB750 would work on a SOHC bike.

Gotcha, I forgot about that. I"m not really interested in any of the DOHC bikes from the 80's on so I never really bothered to look into them too in depth.

That guy is in Seattle... Email and try to find out what he is looking for the bike... Looks real clean...

This bike just shows you what's going on heere in Seattle. People are proud of their crap because other people will pay the price. $1400 for a bike that needs the top end torn down?

Deimos just have patience you will find what you're looking for. Don't be impatiant like me and pay $900 for a non runner that needed tons of work. I have a suspiscion that 550 with the wide ass seat won't be selling it for his asking price anytime soon. But if he does more power to him. Tyr using searchtempest.com for a wider area CL and ebay search, including portland. Don't be afraid to pay a bit more for a better condition bike. You can easily spend the extra cash in short hurry on these things if you have to replace a bunch of stuff. Good luck and when you get a bike we hope to see you at backfire moto night in Ballard every third wednesday evening of the spring and summer.

FWIW this looks like a decent dohc cb750 in your area might even be a fellow JBLMer.

Thanks for the tips and yeah, that's the trend I'm seeing up here, people aren't being realistic with their prices.  I like the fact that mr big ass seat is a running bike but yeah, with that seat, the exhaust/paint condition I can't justify paying that price when I know people are getting running bikes for under a grand...  He keeps telling me he always gets lots of looks.  I'm sure it's because people are in disbelief with that seat. . .

There is a non running CB500four now on craigslist for 800, I guess that's still asking a little too much?  IT's the same bike that was on ebay which hasn't met 'minimum bid' yet at 500.

Since you are stationed in Ft. Lewis, you ever think of looking at CL at your home town? Depending on which part of the country you may find better bikes for better prices..

I'm actually in my home right now.  I used search tempest and there is nothing in my general area, ebay as well.  And I leave here tomorrow so it's not much of an options sadly.

i recall a recent thread from a new member in the washington area saying they ask high prices for sohcs in that area

It's sort of true, certain bikes go quick no matter what, and at probably higher than average prices, but I've bought 2 72 750s and a 76 750a, $400 each for 2, $350 for the other, all titled. 1 was seized, broke it loose the next day and it's still running 3 yrs later, the other 2 were purchased as non runners for project. I wouldn't pay $800 for a non- runner unless it was pristine, if it's titled and average looking, $500, if it's "custom" maybe a little more if it's good, a little less if it's not. There are lots of unemployed/underemployed folks in the PNW, and a seemingly high number of builders, when a tasty morsel hits the water, the fastest sharks get it. Best of luck, and be persistant as well as patient, If you can respond to an ad within the first hour or two, you're chances are pretty good, but can drop quickly after that for the more desireable bikes. I've seen ones like that first one in the $500 range, is that the one with the dropped valve? Whenever I've heard that term, it means something  broke and the valve fell into the cylinder, usually making a mess of things..if so, it's new motor time. If you're interested in sohc cb650s at all, you might pm member "Kit", her and "MickeyX" have a couple here in Portland that they have mentioned selling..one was a BOTM, the other's a project..

Since you are looking at no- title bikes:  This usually means that you'll be searching for a titled bike next ,an untitled machine is useless. If you are looking at project  bikes, most come with no title but some do...and you end up with a full garage.

The owner says 'paint would look better with some tLC.  'Ya think?
Probably the guy put some rattle can clear over the original paint to shine it up a little. It looks like the clear lifted off like a bad sunburn, and he cleared it again??  If that is his standard of improving that ride, walk away. You will have to strip and sand the whole thing ,and a faded OEM paint job would have been a better place to start from.
Another trick is to put a forty dollar Chinese repro fender on the front to make you think it was well cared for. Mmmm Hmm..  That fender will rust as soon as it gets the first rain on it.
I would rather ride a ratty rusty original bike that runs well than a bike that some dude just tried to do a quick cover up job with whatever parts he had. Actually,I do ride a $150.00 barn find that I had on the road for $270.00 total, and it runs great. When a great deal on a 550 came up,I was ready to buy it because of the money I saved by riding the first one.
  As others have stated,be patient.

Ok, tell me if this is a potentially good option.  Found a CB 500 for sale.  250$  It's a bare bones project bike.  He says it doesn't run and that's about it.  Here is a photo...

So, is this a potentially good buy?  I'm waiting for a response about what other parts he has with it and the condition of the engine.

To tews, that cb750 was gone by the time I had a chance to look at it.  My crappy work schedule means I have weeks where I have no personal time sadly.  And to Steve-o I've asked him about the title and am waiting for a response and I can afford a decent sized budget to get a bike running 1 to 2 grand easy.
