What mirrors are you running with 400F/Superbike bars?
« on: January 18, 2012, 06:56:58 AM »
The mirrors on my CB500 with 400F bars are about worthless. They're stock style aftermarket replacements that I bent the arms on, so they wouldn't stick up like antennae. However, that just gives me a very blurry view of my elbows.
I bought some really nice Halcyon bar ends (well built and NOT cheap), but I haven't quite convinced myself that's the look I want. The bike is fairly stock appearing, otherwise.

I have a used set of genuine Honda mirrors, but they must be a mismatched set. One stem is way longer than the other and they sit at different angles. I'm pretty sure Honda used the same mirrors on the 400/500/550/750.

What can I use that will give me a clear view behind me with the lower bars?
Please post pics of what you have, if possible.

Napoleon bar end mirrors are the only way to go.  IMO. Lot of us on here use em and love em.  Very stable.  Look the part.

Well, I have the Halcyon's already. I do like the Napolean's, though. I've used them before and they're better than the cheaper versions. The Halcyon mirrors are a step above, though.

 I was wondering if there's a stock-ish looking mirror I could use?

I know it is not a 400f but they are superbike bars.  Hopefully you will get an idea with this style bar end.  Yes, I know they are turned in - too wide when they are turned out.  Were they worth the $30 I paid for them?  Yes.  Do I really like them when riding?  They work but not really.

They work but not really.

based on the fact that you have them turned in, or?
that's what my Napoleons look like too, only turned out.
some like them turned down and in and some like them down and out.   8)

Naw, turned in would be the same as turn whichever way in my case.  They come loose a lot and then I can't see behind me.  They do kind of vibrate a bit at speed so there is a slight blur.  They smudge easy or my kids keep sticking their fingers on the mirrors.

I was thinking about going to a smaller style, thinking anyway.

Are they REAL Napolean brand and notthe cheap look-alikes? The Napolean brand has a rubber sleeve on the part that inserts into the handle bars. I never had any trouble with my Napolean "barens" mirrors.

Now, anyone else with Superbike or 400F bars? Show me your mirror choice, please.

These are Halcyon. They look similar to Napoleons but are more triangular. Polished stainless too.

I don't remember what they are.  I think they came from TAS.

I'm pretty sure those aren't Napoleon mirrors.  I have the same kind on my 550 and I'd describe them the same way Tipper does, "they work but not really".  And Napoleons are gonna cost more than 30 bucks.  I have true Napoleons on my 750 and the difference between the two is night & day.  The Napoleons are slightly convex, giving a wider field of view, and don't vibrate at all, unlike the Emgo knock-offs.

With narrow bars, you pretty much have to go with bar-end mirrors if you want to be able to see anything but your biceps when riding.

Gordon, I agree.....there really is a difference between the Napoleans and the look-a-likes.

Psychonaut, that looks nice. I went with the round Halcyons. May just have to give them a shot.

 Halcyons it is!
I went with the smaller size of the two round mirrors for asthetics and the field of vision is a litte small, but I can now see around and behind me and they don't blur unless I'm really wailing on the bike. They have a neat ratcheting/folding feature, too.

I plugged the treaded holes on the controls with these rubber plugs from my FLAP.

Those mirrors like awesome. I've been looking for some mirrors for my 400f, and those look like they'd fit the bill just perfectly.

Halcyon offers two sizes in the round mirrors. Mine are the smaller size. They also offer a "traditional" style mirror....looks like the Napoleans and the other cheap knock-offs. What would you call that shape? A trapezoid? Just like the ones in Really?'s post, but chrome.
The Halcyon stuff is heavy and well made and you can fold them in if you need to. Not cheap, but worth it.

For reference, the napoleons can be folded in and set to all sorts of other positions.  The have nice positive lock points on 2 different axes.  Mirrors look good there scottly, i prefer the more square design, but still appreciate a nice mirror.  :)
