Which clear finish on my tank?
« on: January 19, 2012, 05:26:09 PM »
I originally wanted to have my 750's tank left bare metal with a clear shot over it to show the raw steel.  After talking to my local paint guy, he strongly suggested not doing that saying that the clear on bare metal would more than likely end up flaking at some point (from not sticking to the bare metal).

His suggestion was to shoot it with a metal shade of silver, then give it a faux finish by dragging a scotchbrite pad across it (to give it the rough sanded look I wanted).  After doing that, he'd then cover it with a clear.  He said he's done it before and it's turned out great.  The only decision I need to make at this point is which clear finish to go with.  I'm having the frame, fenders and other bits powder coated in a semi-gloss black (roughly 80% gloss), so I'm thinking of going with a straight high gloss for the tank to make it stand out just a tad more.  There will be a few chrome bits here and there on the bike, but not too many.

He's going to do a sample of the finish with the three different clears for me to see (sometime next week) before he actually does the tank, but I wanted some opinions from you guys.

If your intent is to showcase the finish of the tank below the clear coat, then the best route to go is with a high gloss clear, as anything less clear will only cloud what you're trying to show off.

Spraymax2000 high gloss. Nothing better for DIYers. Buffs easy for an excellent but tough finish.
