microfiche

I don't have a microfiche machine.  If I can get some actual microfiche, what are my options for actually using it?  Any thoughts on making a digital copy of whatever is on it?

scanning them can be a PITA. Most of them are Positives. This means black text and clear backing and that is the easy one. Others are negatives which is, yep you guessed it... the other way around. You can scan them in and then tweak and control them in photoshop even if they are negatives but it takes a few tricks.

It can be done

There are companies that provide the service, but it gets pricey.  What bike do you have?  Fiche readers can be bought fairly cheap - cheaper than scanning.

I got my microfiche a few years ago from Motocom. Try RepairManual.com

As far as using it, I took it to one library branch and the lady didn't have a clue. She thought it was a negative. I told her "sort of" and thanked her. I then went to a different branch where they had 3 different machines that not only allow you to read it but also print it at the same time. I now have a hard copy that I take to my local Honda dealer to help educate the kids behind the counter that are younger than my bike.

I have a full set of 'fische cards for all Suzuki's sold in the US from about 1970 to about 1988, and for awhile I was printing off hard copies at work (we have an old Microfische printer here) and selling them on another forum, but it was a pain too, most fische cards are 100+ pages, and it was a slow and laborious task. If I could find a software program so I could scan them and save each page onto a CD, it'd be great! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I agree Terry.

I bought the CB500/4 fiche off eBay 5 years ago more out of interest than any need to use it.

It's still in the drawer...

Terry, granted I'm an old fart with one foot in the grave  ;D, but why wouldn't any halfway decent flatbed scanner do this for you. I've scanned transparencies on mine with no problem. I've even scanned 35mm negatives and slides.

I don't think a regular scanner has the pixil count to get good copy the fiche.  I was trying to get some done but it was to much $ for to small of a job.  Try the library, they sould have a reader/printer.

G'Day Bob, well it's pretty much what James says, I tried scanning them, but the result was miserable. There must be some software out there specifically for this purpose though, surely? ;D

I have to say, I have not specifically tried scanning a larger transparency such as fiche, but my Epson 2450 Photo scanner will do 35mm slides and negs. and create potentially huge files with good resolution. I'll have to give this a try, just hope I can get it done before I croak.  ;D

I believe that a high-res scanner would do. You scan the microfiche in one pass, and get a huge file. With simple programs as IrfanView you crop each page and save it into another file. If it's negative it is a simple as Options->Negative Image, then you save.
