My current project. KZ1000 mono shock dragbike
« on: January 26, 2012, 08:19:00 PM »
Ok, I tried numerous times to document this build from the beginning but either my camera didn't want to download the pictures or i moved forward without taking any. I finally borrowed the wifes camera and took a few shots the other night. Its a KZ1000 frame i modified with a mono shock swingarm off of an water cooled GSXR. I extended the arm using some bolt on extension blocks from a ZX10 build i did. I actually had the blocks welded onto the arm. The shock is from a GSXR1000.

I plan to run the bike in the Crazy8's class in the MIROCK series. Its an 8.88 index for street tired bikes and no wheelie bars. I've gotten used to my bars on the quicker bikes so this will be a new adventure for me to say the least. Glad i kept up my hand clutch skills with my 750F dragbike cause i'm going to need them.

I'm still building the motor for the bike but it will be a KZ based 1325cc push button start set up. That 1325 won't run the index on motor so i'm adding nitrous oxide for some extra horsepower.

Anyway, excuse the junky shop, its actually a woodworking shop that slowly being converted to a motor building/ bike building shop-lol.  Its time to sort it out and clean up some but that won't happen until after the bike is completed.

The pictures arent the best but it'll give you an idea of whats going on. I'm currently wiring the bike with my own race harness. Its a total loss system so only the basics are needed for drag racing.

Hahaha, yeap, you're likely correct. I usually work inside the attached garage part when its warm but i moved into the smaller shop when it got cold. Much quicker and easier to heat an insulated space.

A few more below - if they will post.

Nice project Frank, I've been dreaming of building a GS 1100 based SSB style bike but the entry fees in any other than Street-class are astronomical  :o

I just looked at some of the last pictures i posted. Dang the shop sure looks a mess. Oh well. I've got work to do- no time to get the shop organized-lol. Time is running out to get the bike tested before the first race. Still wiring up the bike and mounting the accessories. Will post some new pics tonight.

Hahaha. I had to make it that long to protrude outside the sidewinder exhaust Sam. I intend to launch the bike with my feet already on the foot pegs so i can control the bike better. Once the motor and  pipe goes on you'll see exactly what i mean. If you recall the set up of my F model, my pegs are also placed so i can have my feet on them when i launch the bike. It also allows for my weight to be as far forward as possible to minimize wheelies- note the z-bars rolled flat to aid in recentering my weight forward on the bike. I only have about 1 inch of foam on the seat pan to lower center of gravity. We are dragracing- not road racing. Lol.

Haven't done any updates on this project but i completed the wiring and tested all the components with a spare ignition controller used for the initial wiring. Everything worked perfectly with the donor box but when i swapped over to the Schnitz Pro Series II controller, when i powered it up, i got nothing. A little trouble shooting of the wiring revealed that the issue is with the PSII itself. It was a used box i got from a friend off his pro modified Suzuki. Now that was a waste of $600. I took the PSII off a top gas roller i had in the shop, hooked up the wires and that spare box works like a charm.  That'll teach me to buy a used electrical controller-time to mail it up to Schnitz to be checked out. Hopefully they can fix the problem or i'll have a $600 paper weight.

I guess its time to get back to building the motor. I'll try to post a few pics of the engine when i start on it tomorrow. I would post pics of the completed wiring but i had to drop the chassis off to a machinist friend to mill down the carrier on my rear wheel so the chain will  clear the frame. I should have the roller back from him by mid week and will take some pictures then.

I worked on the bike right after i made the post on the other thread. I took some pictures before i got too far along and tried to post them but couldn't. I then went back out and started on the final assembly of the motor and worked  until 4am this morning. I got the engine built and started on degreeing the cams. I quit when the checking duration on the intake cam was off- or maybe i was too dang tired and my ability to do simple math had diminished.

I will attempt to post the initial pictures in a few. I will post the last set when my wife downloads them from her camera.

I've got an extended swingarm you may be interested in. I got it with a bunch of other KZ parts  when I had my Z. I'll take some pics of it and other KZ parts I have  and post them for you. It would only be a short road trip to come get them if you wanted them , I live in NC just west of Winston-Salem.

Shim on bottom  Web Cams, 480/460 lift. I don't own anything with shim on top right now. Thanks for the offer. Now if you have shim on bottom...... Needs cases, cranks and tranny's for a KZ or GS.

I also have a GS 850 (SHAFT), I don't know if the internals are the same as the 1100 as far as gears go.

As far as i know, nothing significant will interchange between the 850 and the 1100 GS motors.

What other KZ parts do you have??
