I am right at 30 minutes from Denton.  You should be about 45 minutes from Denton right?

What time do you plan on leaving your place in the morning?  We tack on 5 or 6 hours and we are at Lake Travis.

It's crazy there this time of year and of course the fall. Tons of rallys (last weekend there were 10,000 motorcycles in town!) and the San Antonio/Austin riders are there in mass riding the hills on weekends. Dual Sport riders have recently discovered all the gravel county roads that criss cross through ranches and unbelievable roads.  It's all magic. And I'm stuck in Houston.

Chris - let's meet at Smokey J's BBQ, it is on the SW corner of 2222 & 620 in far west Austin. Let's shoot for 4:30. We can fuel up on gas & food here and this is where the great roads start - Lime Creek Road.

Joe/Rick - you should be able to make it in 4 hours. Take I-35 to Round Rock, head west on RR 1431 (don't go into Austin).
Take 1431 all the way to Lago Vista and turn R at the high school.

Hard to post when you are riding as much as we have been!  Great effing time!  The lizard is secure, we found ourselves on a dirt road for a few miles, a small technical issue slowed us, but didn't stop this train.  Really had a tappet screw back out and knock a whole in the tappet cover! We limped to the next town, 10 miles away. More later...

Joe and Justin saved the whole Texas part of the relay last year. Without those two Superheros, GZ 1.0 wouldn't have made it into, or out of Texas! 8)

Rick, I didn't do anything you couldn't do.  I just started working on your bike, without your permission.  ;D

Well, this year Justin really came through and brought Godzilla through a big portion of Texas.  I didn't carry G-man at all, and I don't care.  Last year we were in such a rush to get from one point to the next that the ride was almost secondary.  I met some really great people last year and had an awesome time, and meeting other people from the SOHC4 community is what this is all about, but the rush to get to the next place was always in your head. 

This year was all about seeing old friends and meeting a few more.  We got to meet up and ride, not with any real destination because we had to get to the next spot, but just to ride and hang out as friends. Chris and Robin put me up in Houston last year, and I really feel that if we were not 250 miles away from each other, we would hang out quite a bit  They are awesome people.  Tom rode with me from Houston all the way to Big Spring and beyond, last year.  He is a riot and a great riding buddy.  Steve put us up in the camp grounds again this year.  He helped organize everything and helped us pick some really awesome roads.  I am not kidding, when I say I want to move to Lago Vista, and if the opportunity presents itself, I will be there.   Rick rode in the truck with me all the way down to Austin and back.  8 or 9 hours in a truck together will help you get to know someone pretty quickly and I am glad I got to know Rick.  Justin is an animal.  I don't know how he does all that riding alone, but he really makes it happen. 

This year was much better for me than last year.  I had so much fun these last 2 years, and I cannot wait to see these guys again.

Just got word from the Houston guys that they made it back safe and sound.  Next weekend is the LA leg! 

So about Really's tappet cover.  He has some great picks, but the adjuster backed out and hit the tappet, knocking a hole in it and we lost the adjuster.  We limped it to Fredricksburg 10 miles away.  It was almost 4pm at this point and we tried finding a bike place someone mentioned, but it was a no-go.  We tried to find a bolt of the same pitch from the local Ace Hardware, but that was not happening either. Tom heard about another bike shop (only one in town) from someone in the convenience store and we googled it.  Chris called them and they said that they were closing, but to hurry over and they would wait for us.  The bike shop there was bad-ass!! The guys there were super friendly.  We went out back and they had a CB400 twin, so we scored a tappet cover, but the adjuster in there was the wrong size  :'(  He had a old CM200 and we pulled the cover off of that and it too was the wrong size  :'( :'(   He goes inside and one of the other guys there said "what about that head from the Suzuki".  They pull this box off of the shelf and sure enough, the right size adjuster and lock nut!!!  They even loaned us the tools to fix it, which I did right there in the parking lot.  Rick forked over a cool $20 for the parts and the help.  What a lifesaver.  They even had a really awesome tool for adjusting the valves that has tick marks for every .001.  I so need that tool.  At any rate, the bike was back and the valve adjustment was done.  We left that town and hauled ass back to Marble Falls and then back to Lago Vista to camp.

This year was much smoother on the left side as well! ;D Like Jerry said before, 2011 was a test run for this year! BTW, I know who Justin is, and I know Rick is really Really?, but I/we don't really know who the other folks are. Please link the real names to forum names...  ;) Thanks.

Let's back up to Friday:

The Dallas guys, Joe and Rick, made it to the Austin area by 1pm and I met them at the campground by 2. I've admired Joe's 550 since I saw it last year and chose to ride my 550 for the ride today.
We cruised the twisty roads around Lago Vista for a short while and stopped for a beer and a sandwich.
We then headed to West Austin to meet up with the Houston riders and when we pulled in to Smokey J's BBQ, Tom, Chris and Robin were there waiting on us! There were six of us at this point, although Chris was on his Ducati and Robin on her Kaw.



We talked for a bit and then it was time to ride. I chose one of my favorite roads in the area, infamous Lime Creek Road.
I lead the pack with Joe following closely behind. Not wanting to hold him up, I hammered on the throttle out of every turn we went through! Both our bike's motors are stock, except for the mufflers, and evenly matched in performance, proven earlier in the day on a rare straight road in Lago Vista.

After the 10 miles or so, this great road ended and we turned off. My throttle started feeling very odd and then the tube broke!



So, we all pull over and are mystified by this unusual break down. First suggestion was to leave the bike and go get a truck to pick it up. I really didn't like that idea and then thought I could turn the idle screw all the way up and hobble it back, worth a try I thought.
I was able to do it but the bike would slow to 35 mph on the uphills and soar to 70 going down!

Went back to the campground for some libations and then to Maria's Bar & Grill for some great margaritas and Tex Mex food. All in all, a great day!

But if you didn't start pushing to getting it done, a trip that could have easily turned into a wreck and had me spending a whole buttload of money to fix became an adventure and made the day really kewl!  Everyone helped in their way as well.  Neat to see everyone help a brotha out of a jam!

It was a great weekend, something not normal for me since I am more or less a hermit with three kids and a wife along with life itself.  I have not uploaded any pics from my phone yet but I will.  I just awoke from my looooong nap.  Ate dinner right after Joe left the house, took a shower, laid on the bed and was out in about 5 minutes.

Tom is friggin' hoot!  Whata-Farmer (Justin's new tag) followed a close second.  :)       I enjoyed meeting Stev-o, Chris and Robynn as well.

It's gonna take me a month to clean Satin, she is sooooooo dirty now!

Yes, with the price of diesel, he parked his rig and is back at the farm with his father.  He was thelast one to leave the campground and has not been heard from since.

The Farmer will not be rushed ok! Iron ass riding is tough on a man. speaking of ass mine still hurts from that seat. the last section of 71 really was driving me crazy. pulled that blue thing out and just left the doggy bed it was much better. It was nice not to have so much wieght on the shoulders this year it was way funner. I wonder if the other teams have his much fun? Becasue we #$%*ing raged this year on and off the bikes.
