What are you using for carburetion? stock, or something juicier?

Stock carbs, using stock plenum (the thing with the built in stacks) with a large cone filter.

It won't be all-out race spec with that setup, since the single large cone filter is a bit restrictive. I do hope to have a decently streetable bike with it though.

I will eventually upgrade to CRs though, unless someone comes up with a kit to fit Mikuni RSs to a 550, like they have for 34s on a 750.

I have read CR's are over kill even for a hopped up 550...

I have developed a pretty successful CR26 kit for the 550 but have often thought about trying it with the Mikuni RSs.

Looks good. What are the "rubber carburetor holders?"

And is there anything to keep the carbs from just hanging, because there's no stock airbox to connect to the other side.

The CR Carbs are much lighter than the old stock and don't really need any support (especially with my machined spigot adapters) but as a precaution, I have used a standard Zip tie from the throttle cable bracket to the frame.

From everything I've read, I keep hearing CRs are overkill for the 550, even on a built motor. Is there any truth in that?

Most people have been using the CB29's and those ARE too much for a stock street 550.

The primary reason is no one else has supplied the 26's in a bolt on kit. Sudco didn’t offer it, so none of the dealers thought to develop one on their own.

I also solved the clearance issue with the Pod filters by producing shorter intake spigot adapters.

I know cyclex sells a cr26 kit, but I believe I read something about having to adapt throttle cables, clearance issues, and other problems.

The only problem I'd see with getting your kit is the new intake runners are not port matched for my ported head.

The CR kit is beautiful, but it costs 2x as much I will end up having in my 550 when it is all said and done.

I think that is because CycleX is trying to adapt a kit made for the CB400F. They are laid out rather differently.

Yes, if you wanted them to be ported like your others, that part would have to be done on your end.

There is no doubt that it's a hefty investment, But they do provide an average 10% HP gain right out of the box.

Made some progress (but fighting what may or may not be an issue). Head all bolted down and torqued to 21 ft-lbs on APE studs. Showing off the WebCam 358b, Dynoman adjustable cam sprocket, Kibblewhite valves, springs, and titanium retainers. After I get the cam (non?-)issue sorted out, I can degree the cam, bolt on the valve cover, then install the engine in the frame. But not before I get the rest of the powdercoating off the frame, just a few spots where the engine brackets go. I can take care of the clutch, oil pickup, accessories, and covers later.

Got my exhaust back. Carpy's yoshi replica pipe that was ceramic coated matte black. Will get a picture up later. Finally got my last powdercoated part back as well; a fork bottom that was giving him some SERIOUS issues, possibly something to do with a solvent soaked into the pores, air pockets in the casting, or something. Didn't come out perfect, but after 5 attempts, the blemishes aren't noticeable.

Now I can finally assemble the front end with a billet top clamp, powdered lower tree fork bottoms and clamps, and caps, Tarozzi fork brace, new CycleX fork tubes, Progressive springs, all new seals and oil, as well as tapered bearings.

After all that I can get the HondaMan rebuilt and modified swingarm on, and be just about ready to fire up.

I'm not even going to mention the trouble I'm going to have getting it safetied, especially since they switched us to a system where the mechanic uses an ipad to take pictures of everything...

What cam? If you haven't yet, check clearances between cam lobe & the "oil dam wall" in the head, plus the cam lobe & underside of rocker.

In the pic see where there is material removed to allow lobe clearance. With the valve cover upside down and with rockers installed it's easy to see the Megacycle 126-20 cam lobe contacted the underside of the rocker arm before it touched the contact pad of the rocker.

I know the milder 58a cam clears fine, maybe yours as well or you likely would have heard the warning before this.

Oh, yeah I checked those. The lobes are fairly close to the walls, but no contact. The rocker arms looked good too.
