Which Project next?
« on: February 11, 2012, 07:45:55 AM »
I have a '78 550K that I rode home about 8 months ago. Complete bike, but smoking from #1 cylinder.
I've collected 99% of the parts for this project. I've ported and polished a head, have a CB650 cam, NOS Jardine exhaust, overbore pistons, etc. The bike will have Euro bars and stock pegs, a one color paint job and stock lighting , etc. I hope to put lots of long distance miles on this one.

After swapping a 550 engine into my '71 CB500, I was left with a good running but leaky CB500 engine/carbs. I found a title 550 frame on Craigslist and have picked up a few other odds and ends. Along with what's in my parts stash, I have about 85% of what I need to build a "Sweep The Floor" bike. Meaning, sweep the floor of the garage, bolt all the parts on that frame and ride off!!
This bike will be down and dirty with not a lot of polishing and detailing. Probaly run Clubmans and 400F pegs, or maybe some dirtbike bars. Total rat-bike, cafe', Brat style thingy.

Both engines will need to go on the stand. The 500 just needs fresh gaskets from the head up. The 550 will, obviously, need them from the case up and I'll have to bore the cylinders, replace pistons, etc.

Which would you do first? The "STF" bike or finish the project that I was about to start anyway before I found the titled frame?

i'd like to hear more about the overbore.  Considering one myself.  Where did you source the +size pistons?

Think I'd do the '78 first.  And then you'll have more parts to sweep on the floor!

'78 it is! I've been collecting parts and planning this one for a while. It makes sense to finish one before starting another. Pics and maybe a build thread soon.
