Reproduction decals no longer available in US?
« on: May 29, 2006, 09:17:19 am »
Just read 6packrunners post in the Candy Gold Formulation thread. I took a look at all the sites I have bookmarked and every single one has removed their Honda decals. OBB still has tank/side cover badges listed, but that means nothing.

Anyway, just thought this deserved it's own thread 'cause to me this is a big deal. There are quite a few parts that Honda no longer sells and I wonder if tank stripes and such are available.

Since it's American Honda that is sending all the "cease and desist" orders I wonder if any of you UK or Aussie riders have sources for decal sets?

If Honda is in fact behind this @#%$^& then those !@#$%^&*'s need to start making their @#$%^& products again !!!!!!!

This needs to be addressed with Honda. Anyone have a contact or other info? I think a mass emailing is in order.

They can at least have a licensed authorized manufacturer or make the products themselves.

New tanks, etc would be real nice.

You should be able to get the Honda decals form this excellent UK supplier:

http://www.sunrisegraphics.co.uk/decals.html

I have used them for some repro stuff and the quality was excellent. The shipping wouldn't be too costly either I wouldn't have thought.

You can get pattern or NOS from here too:

http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk

Hope the problems with the US supply get sorted - if not I wonder how long it will be before it affects the UK?

www.afegraphics.com sells decals, too.  These suppliers are also listed in the FAQ's under parts suppliers.

Both American suppliers of reproduction decals that are listed in our FAQ section have pulled their Honda listings. This just happened in the past week (I think?).  6packrunner contacted one of his suppliers and got an email response which is in the "Candy Gold" thread. I hope he doesn't mind that I copied it here?

"Unfortunately we are unable to offer Honda decals at this time due to

No issues at all. Get the word out.  This same tactic was done in 1990 by one of the big three car companies. Their copyright and trademark department went gung-ho and nailed everyone who was in violation. Small clubs were hit with cease and desist orders. Well, just  imagine the goodwill they generated for themselves. The lost a lot more in frustrated enthusiasts than was ever made from lost royalities. These were the backbone of the hobby and were not using the trademarks as items for commerce. Looks like Honda may be doing the same thing. Since they no longer made tank stripe kits for their bikes, and they close all the doors to obtain them, what type of loyality are you making for yourself? Why would I want to buy one of your new products when you make it hard to keep an old product of yours going. You have no interest in it as shown by the unavailability of parts, and yet stomp on someone who does try to fill that niche. And how huge do you really think the market is? I'm sure Reproduction Decals are not selling thousands of stripes. As Lee Iaccoca called the enthusiasts "an insignificant market segment"

I was afraid of that. When I heard the news I had wondered if you obtained a set before this happened. I guess I know the answer now...  :(

Some of these legalities get bogged down forever and those with deep pockets are generally the winner as they bleed their not-so-flush opponets into submission. But for 30 plus year old vehicles that the manufacturer has turned its back on soft parts and given the size of the market........
But then again once you put a lawyer on a money scent. ::)

Oh - and as another heads up, I just got word from seabee750 that the 1972-1976 seats are now finished and discontinued. I've got an order in and hope it gets filled before the door slams there also. :-\

just another case of honda supporting their market.if im not mistaken the biggest sport bike they build now is still the cbr1000.geez kawasaki and suzuki both build bikes at least 1300 cc and there is no racing support from honda either,ya cant buy a damn thing for a honda as far as racing parts are concerned.

Yeah, just needed one other part and the tank decals and I was going to start hunting for a painter. Guess there's not much hurry on that score now.  >:(

Not too long ago, our own aviation companies tried to cramp down on plastic model companies on producing scale planes of their products THAT WAS PAID BY OUR OWN TAXES.

It seem like the new guys on American Honda don't want anything to do with the products that Mr. Honda himself produced. That's why I guess I don't have any new Hondas built after 1983, even though I still own more than 20 of the classic Hondas. Fortunately reproducing the tank striping on early CB750, 500, 450 and 350s are not as tough as the 1972 Kawasaki tank graphics.

Since American Honda got rid of all their NOS parts from classic Hondas some years back, (although they're now offering expensive stuff themselves like the original CB750 pipes), I'm thankful that there are good aftermarket guys that often makes superior reproductions of the parts no longer on their lists than the originals. Until they can offer better NOS parts themselves (cheaper, I hope), they should quit wasting money on expensive lawyers, and offer better service like the original Honda people and just leave good things alone!

When my tank went for painting, the paint shop produced the graphics required "in house" from a photo I supplied - not quite an exact reproduction in this instance (but then they weren't charging me for it either) - maybe that is the way to go?

I took a chance and sent an eMail to Reproductiondecals to verify the copyright situation. Though technically true, here is the response I recieved:

Bob:

Hi.  Due to issues with Honda we are no longer to have their products
on our Website.

We are still dedicated to helping vintage motorcycle enthusiasts in
need of graphics.
I am still able to provide you with graphics for your CB750 K0.

The price shown includes shipping.  If you are interested in purchasing
these decals through Paypal our Paypal ID is
orders@reproductiondecals.com  If you would like to order by Credit
Card  you can call us at 519-668-7152 with your Credit Card info.

thanks
Ellen

Attached find an image with price information.

You can still order them, I just did. Call the number above and ask for Ellen. Seems they still have some in stock, she did not mind that I was going to post this. If you need some my advice would be to not procrastinate (like I did  ;)) get them while you can and before this mess really shuts things down.

Still some sets on eBay from ReproductionDecals.com which makes great sets - I got some last year for my 550F.

I just picked up an extra set of these for when I repaint in the future.  Damn Honda America.  What next - telling us not to use the wing logo on the website.

Shee...they might be spying on us right now, probably using the national security scare as an excuse.

Fortunately for me, three of seven CB750 gas tanks still have the original stripes so it's easy to take measurements and duplicate it on other tanks but 1969-1972 CB750s had slightly different fuel tank stripes in each model year, including the prototypes.
