First bike - '76 CB550 - Boston
« on: February 21, 2012, 07:04:03 AM »
Hey everyone,
First post, first motorcycle.  I'm been into building/restoring vintage mopeds for a couple of years and decided to graduate to a real motorcycle.  Traded a moped for this 1976 CB550.  It runs, but has issues with the charging system. I've seen a lot of info about that on this forum, so I'll be tearing into it soon enough.

Hey, welcome to the forum!  That's a pretty nice looking stocker you've got!  I always liked that orange color.  The FAQ, and Tips & Tricks sections can help you out with those charging issues.  Have Fun!

Welcome Untold.  I am a newbie also.  I just picked a bike that looks the same as yours.  You must have a really cool moped to get this bike.

Thanks guys.  I'm dealing with transferring the title and getting the bike registered and inspected, so it's kind of a pain in the ass right now.
The moped I traded was a 1977 Motobecane 50v that I restored to great condition. The kid didn't want to mess with registering and insuring the motorcycle and just wanted something that was ready to go, so we were both happy with the deal.

Also came with a 4-1 header and headlight fairing.  Undecided on whether or not to swap headers.

Welcome. Nice looking machine. If you have storage save your headers, a couple months on this site and you'll be looking for all kinds of aftermarket parts.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

Welcome! It looks like my kind of bike! Tag/Title trouble? What state was the bike from? Do you have a good friend in NH? The color makes it a 75 but the ser#s would be certain. Also back then when sold new if it was a leftover it would of been titled a 76.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Great trade!  First off, confirm you have a good battery, a must for these bikes. Also check/clean all connections.
The stators on these bikes rarely fail.

Bought a new battery, replaced some bulbs and fuses, and cleaned all connections and now it seems good to go.  All lights and signals work and the battery isn't draining like it was.
I've got the title, but just anticipate problems whenever I go to the RMV.  Maybe it's my history trying to get moped stickers.
