Looking into a 1911
« on: February 28, 2012, 03:25:42 PM »
So I have always loved the look and feel of a model 1911.  I was looking into getting one and I was wonder if anyone had a brand recommendation.  I was looking to stay under a thousand but get the best gun I can for the money.

Kimber. If I was at your budget that's all I'd consider. I don't own one, but have shot a bunch. Made in USA and top notch quality.

I saw the kimber and thought it was pretty good quality but personally never saw a one growing up.  Think it's a rich mans gun. :-p

Kimber if you have fairly deep pockets is a great 1911 model.

I've seen kimbers go for $8-900. And you can get them chambered in 9mm if you want. The fit and finish for that price is unmatched. I want one, in case you can't tell.

If you have never owned a 1911 and you are used to a weapon like a Glock or Smith 5906 the 1911 carried cocked and locked can be a little uncomfprtable.  I have a tricked out Taurus 1911 which i really like and the price was great. I shoot it but seldom carry it. Some purists do not like what they consider off brands.  I also have Da/Sa Smith and a Glock.

Ruger now makes 1911 too, check them out. The brand typically builds weapons like tanks, reloading manuals specify heavy loads for Ruger - and it is made in the USA.

IF you want the most gun for the least money, stay away from Springfields but DO go for a Taurus.  I have a steel frame in .45 and it is just fantastic.  You can't get any other 1911 with all of the features that Taurus has put into this one for even twice the price.  It is accurate, built well, and comes with an unconditional and transferable LIFETIME warranty.  The also offer it in .45 and .38 super if you like do turn money into smoke and if you don't. they offer the same gun in 9mm.  They are all the same price.  I'm hot to buy a PT1911 in 9mm but I don't really have the need since I have a few 9's already.  If you are interested check out gunbroker for deals on used.  They come up once in a while.

Maybe you shouldn't rule out Taurus if they offer lifetime warranty. I didn't know that. That's something you definitely can't beat for the price.

Springfield has a lifetime warranty. They never ask for a receipt either, so get a used one.

For the money, Spartan sti, or rock island armory. The ria are made in the Phillipines I think, spartan takes them and hand works them. They get rave reviews amongst gun nuts. The only reason I got the Springfield loaded was the warranty combine with night sights, and the one I touched had nearly perfect frame to slide.

If you're not going to carry, the Springfield range officer is excellent for the money. Excellent.

My nephew was shooting competition with a Kimber, he was pretty down on his shooting talent. The old boy that rides to the range with him talked him into shooting with his Les Baer just to keep it loose and exercised. He jumped two classes with his score that day.
That's not to say there's anything wrong with a Kimber, just his Kimber. He Owns a Les Baer now. They are expensive. I shoot a stainless AMT Hardballer. They are pretty hit and miss for quality. Mine seems OK

Perhaps.  But they are accurate, and reliable.  And, worthy of trusting your life to them.

Agreed.  My AMT Hardballer (bought used) shot pretty big dissatisfying groups with the barrel it came with.  I fit a new barrel to it and the groups halved in size.  Still not great, and less interesting than my National Match Colts, but it's as good as it will get without better slide to frame fit.  It was and is very reliable though, shooting anything you can stuff in the magazine.  I fit a .22 conversion to it, and that is pretty accurate and cheap to shoot.

Cheers,

You should ask yourself if you intend to shoot in competition or with your life on the line.  I shot in competttion for several years but my carry weapon is for dependability ease of use confidence and concealability.  In truth I never owned a gun that i could outshoot in accuracy.  When I missed I missed not the gun.  I shot a Wilson Combat 9MM a friend gave me and it was like a Ferrarri in feel and price.  I really could not see any difference in my scores

We were trained on and issued the USGI 1911A1 back when I was in the service. Lot’s of choices in the 1911 market nowadays, think I’ll stick with my standard (bone stock) military issue 1943 Colt that I’ve owned for 44+ years. It’s accurate enough for recreational shooting and has never malfunctioned using Mil-Spec hardball ammo. Over the years I’ve had to replace the original WWII magazine springs and slide stop, but I’m not certainly not complaining about that.

Perhaps a USGI spec 1911 is in your future?
