Topic: Michigan Historic & Authentic Plates

I know this was mentioned in another thread, but thought I'd post it to have its own spot.

You'll need to fill out the form (Historic or Authentic), make a copy of your title and plate (Authentic only, in color)) and submit proof of insurance. The Authentic lets you register a license plate you have versus the Historic which the state issues you one. The Authentic is a one time $35 charge versus the Historic at $30 and has a renewal. This service is only available through the mail - your local SoS office can't help.

I went with the Authentic so I could use my 1974 w/75 sticker on my K5.

Has the historic plate rules changed?  I got the historic plate for my bike a couple years ago and only have to renew every 7 years.  ...oops, just checked your link and you have to renew every 10 years...Hi K5 owner was good to meet ya the other week at the VJMC meeting

the only problem with using a plate thats the same year as your bike is its very obvious to the cops that you (should) be going to a parade bike show etc  not just out riding enjoying the day on the other hand if you run a historical plate it looks just like a regular plate and they leave you alone.

I have been pulled over a few times and only one cop even asked where I was going or what I was doing..."ohh, just out enjoying the breaking of speed limits officer, sir "...kinda seems like the restrictions are more of a suggestion than a law...and would be very difficult to enforce anyway...that said, I'm currently knockin' on wood and generally try to avoid contact with "Mr. Po Po Man" as much as possible...

Hi Dave, I shared you're concern on being pulled over.

I'm thinking the same way as Sean; the rule set appears vague ("The vehicle can only used for participating in historical club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, car shows, swap meets, and similar uses."). "similar uses" should cover me in the event I get pulled over for the plate.

I saw an add on craigslist Detroit metro a couple day ago for authentic bike plates for 35$ he a a couple from the 70's. If anybody is interested.

Its surprising where you can get plates, and how many are available. I was at an antique car swap meet in Kalamazoo and several of the vendors had plates still new in the wrapper. I bought one and the guy threw in the 75 sticker for $20. Another option is Ebay.

i have an authentic plate on my '34 ford street rod and have never had a problem.  I picked up a '72 for my bike for $13 at a meet.

also, if  you haven't been following Lansing, the new "Dream Cruise Law" remove all the restrictions for the month of August so ride all you want!!!!  :-)
