FLAMING DRAGON paint by Honda Factory?
« on: March 02, 2012, 08:18:47 PM »
Today in Walnecks I saw a pic of a 450 Honda with a style of paint I have seen once on here before on a 4. The guy claimed it was from the Honda Factory and was called Flaming Dragon paint.
I have my doubts that over the last  4 decades, that I never heard of this?? did anyone else ??

Now, done thru a dealer on a showroom fresh new bike with warranty, that I could believe...

As reported in the February magazine from the VJMC, there was a Honda option for the 1972 and 1973 CL350 and CL450 Scramblers, called the "Flying Dragon" option.  This option included tank and side covers painted in a special swirl two-tone paint scheme.  There were three different options for each model: Gold/Purple, Silver/Purple, and Green/Purple.  The part numbers were respectively: 06171-456-810SM/SN/SP (for the CL350) and  06171-347-810SM/SN/SP (for the CL450).  These options apparently were able to be ordered for installation on a stock bike, either by the owner or by the distributor/dealer prior to delivery of the new bike.

Pic from VJMC.  I believe this paint is applied by spraying the base color then the part is dipped in the contrasting color which is floating on water.  I saw it done in the late 60's early 70's.

That's exactly how it's done. You submerge the tank in water, and float enamel on it, stir it around a bit to make the swirls, then lift the tank out and let it dry completely before you even THINK about touching it. you can do several colors at once. I did a few car and van models like this back in the '70's when I was but a lad.

Man I dont know WHERE that was available, and I sure never heard it till now..
I do remember a custom 500-4 out of Japan maybe a while back with similar blue paint. The tank only pic I saw in the lastest Walnecks was blue.

This looks like it would be a fun thing to try on a tank that you don't care too much about.  I wouldn't mind having a tie dye tank.

I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Answered my own question to this one. lol looks like its called a "marbled paintjob."  Very big in the guitar world for years.  I need to find out how to apply it with a primer tho, most likely would need it to be sealed so nothing lifts.
