So heres some pics of my half put together engine. The pistons are coated in a thermal coating and a piston skirt protector. The valves have a thermal coating also. I have pics somewhere Ill try to dig them up. Its all stock. The whole engine only had about 9k on it it just sat for years with a literal rats nest in the airbox and carbs. After getting it running i saw how bad the valves were sealing so i tore it down. I had a full valve job minor porting and all gaskets seals replaced. I intend to leave the points / condenser and everything else stock. Just some mods to slight imperfections like casting defects.
More to follow even if it takes time!

Heres some pics of my micro slick piston skirts and thermal barrier faces and valves. Then i had a complete valve job done. The cylinders are stock bore just honed. New rings. Its a bit out of context right now once i get the tank painted the colors will make more sense.

So now I'm on the phone with NIC industries to find out if they make an enamel that matches the orange powder. They do not, however they can "make" it. So now I just have to wait for a call back. I'm excited!

I was simply pointing out that I didn't document the assembly very well. I wasn't planning on doing a "BUILD" thread when I started. The build is fine and the engine is only half put together because I'm awaiting some parts to be delivered. I just tend to tell it how it is, a half-assed documentation of a build with the engine currently being half together. I intend to have a very well built engine when I have all the parts.

Fuel Tank Scheme in powdercoat and paint.

So as I wait for parts to complete the engine. I have started to brainstorm my tank scheme. Heres the tank I purchased for $50.00 shipped. I'm going to keep my original tank because the paint is in good condition. As soon as this thing arrives its getting electrolytic rust removal. Then straight to the powder-coated to get coated in the same gold color that's on the cylinder and head. Here's where i run into trouble. I want to do black and orange checker about as wide as the fuel door down the whole tank. My powder-coater won't do it due to his lack of time. I called NIC industries (cerakote) they said they can mix just about any color pc into a spray-able paint and was supposed to call me back. I still haven't heard back from them. So now I may buy an orange pearl and mix it myself close enough to match. Anyone know how to spray checkered flag? To finish it all off I'll clear the tank.

Don't spray a checkered stripe use Vinyl and have clear coat sprayed over it.

If you powder coat the outside of the tank you may have big problems because you will have to treat and line the inside of the tank afterwards. The powder coaters bake the tank at 350º and the lining of the tank would burn up.

If you get the outside of the tank powdercoated THEN put MEK or other solvents inside the tank to wash it out and get rid of moisture the MEK can melt through the powder coat where there is a pin hole and ruin the powdercoat. BTW....Acetone absorbs 3 times more moisture than MEK.

I would treat the inside of the tank FIRST with Caswell liner mixd with a bottle of white colorant from TAP plastics. (the good quality one) Only about $5.00 A must do.

Oh...use the whole kit NOT 1/2 because it would take so long to turn the tank around to get the whole inside coated that the liner will have already set up.
Use the whole kit and keep turning it around. Takes about 1 hour. But you can just turn it avery 10-15 minutes till it sets up. It does a perfect job.

THEN Get the tank painted and put on the graphics and take it back to get it clear coated with gas proof paint. Make sure the painter knows to put a couple light coats on at first and let them dry before putting on heavy coats of clear or the graphics could lift up. You can buy the checkered vinyl at many places.

I've done all this before. I am aware of the burning melting and whatnot. I am painting the checkered flag because I want the matching colors. You will not find a sticker that matches the pearl orange of my powdercoat.

Yes sir its an orange pearl. In person its got a very slight yellow / red chameleon effect. I got all the valves adjusted and something is bothering me. Number 1 cylinder Intake tappet is way screwed in. Much more then the rest. However I checked and checked again and it is adjusted correctly. Very strange. Got it running and unfortunately the number 4 carb is not providing fuel (at all). When I first reconnected the fuel, number 2 float was stuck. That cleared up with some tapping on the bowl. This sucks because I just tore those carbs down in the fall. The bright side is that I can go color crazy with the carbs now.

This might be a stupid question... Are those Mikuni carbs?  And what kind of manifold is that?  I love the orange and I'm wondering how you managed to find/make a paintable manifold?

No they are kehin pd46 s factory on my 77. The manifolds are stock just powdercoated.
